Daniel Raymond Corpron
Date Of Birth: 05/01/1961
Date of Death: 03/13/2024
Dan was born in rural Northern Thailand to parents Douglas Ogden Corpron and Helen Louise Ball Corpron. He was delivered by his father in their home in the jungle of Sangkhlaburi where his dad was establishing a hospital with a focus on missionary work. As the fifth of seven children, life was adventurous for little Danny. His family had a menagerie of pets, including chickens, some possums (eaten by a King Cobra), and a monkey. His life changed drastically at age five when his family moved to
Yakima, Washington, where he spent the rest of his childhood. In high school he was active in tennis, volleyball, Spanish Club, Hiking Club, and Young Life. He spent many hours rock climbing and getting into mischief with his buddies. From early on, Dan always loved music and enjoyed a variety of genres.
Dan attended the University of Puget Sound and graduated with a degree in a "new" field called Computer Science. There he met his future wife, Julie Nelson, and they married on April 28th, 1984 in Seattle. In 1987 he completed his Masters Degree in Computer Science from Oregon State University. After receiving his degree, Dan and Julie moved to Philadelphia and then to Boston for work and for Julie's educational pursuits. They lived on the East coast for five years before relocating to the Pacific Northwest, settling in Portland, and starting their family.
Dan continued to work in software. His first job in Portland was at Timberline Software in 1992. He moved to WebMD in 2004, and he finished his career at LegitScript in 2021. Dan embraced his retirement and took full advantage of his free time.
Dan was a man of many hobbies and even more communities. He coached his kids' teams in basketball, soccer, lacrosse, and Destination Imagination. He dedicated many hours to volunteer activities, including the Raleigh Park school garden, youth group work trips to Mexico and the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, and Habitat for Humanity. He served on committees and helped with gardening and maintenance projects at church.
Following in his family tradition, Dan was a passionate gardener. If you didn't know where he was, you could usually find him in his garden. He was also a great cook, known for his excellent Thai food, bread, and more recently, wood-fired pizza. Dan was a veteran hiker and backpacker on mountains and trails across Oregon and Washington. He was a curious traveler and made trips to five continents. Whether it was cross-country skiing, hiking, mountain biking, or volleyball, Dan loved to play outdoors. He credited ADAPT Training for keeping him fit to enjoy all those activities. He enjoyed working with his hands, frequently starting projects and sometimes even finishing them. Most of all he loved his family - he cherished being a Corpron, was always supportive of his wife and children, and never hesitated in saying how proud he was of his family.
Dan is survived by his wife Julie; children Douglas, Eli, and Grace; siblings Ken (Shannon), Catie (Kim) Smith, Karl (Jedean), and Karyn (Charley) Schimmels; and countless cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Bill, and sister Pam Corpron Parker.
The unexpected loss of Dan to his family, friends, and community is profound. His sense of humor and boisterous laugh will be missed. There are many ways to remember him: go for a hike, work in a garden, listen to music, drink an IPA, laugh.
