Daniel Fred Ellis, age 70, passed away at The Landings in Carbondale, October 23, 2025, at 4:30 p.m. after a 10-month battle with brain cancer.
He was born August 27, 1955, to Raymond and Betty (Fowler) Ellis in Marion, IL.
He graduated from Johnston City High School in 1973 and Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1977.
He married Linda Farthing in Carrier Mills, IL, on August 2, 1980, and they shared 45 years of marriage together.
Dan's work career included jobs at Menard Correctional Center, Marion Federal Prison, Old Ben Coal Company Mine #25 and the Illinois Youth Correctional Center in Harrisburg, which he retired from in 2014. In his retirement, he enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family.
He was a member of The First United Methodist Church in Marion.
He is survived by his wife Linda; two daughters, Kristin (Thadchai) Sattayatam of Bolingbrook, IL and Kara (Aaron) Baker of Prattville, AL; four grandchildren, Ava and Benjamin Sattayatam and Samuel and Zachary Baker; sister, Kathy (Dick) Marlatt of Danville, IL; brother, Kenneth (Cindy) Ellis of Marion, IL. He is also survived by mother-in-law, Sharon Farthing; brother-in-law, David Farthing; sister-in-law, Julie Farthing; niece, Ashley Farthing; nephew, Aaron (Kalli) Farthing; great-niece, Kaya Ray Farthing; nieces, Jeanne (Joe) Campanella, Kay (Steven) Gabby, Melissa (Paul) Johnson, Melinda (Mike) Harvel and Rebecca Hutson; nephews, Shawn Ellis and Kenny (Mari) Ellis; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Betty Ellis; brother, Tom Ellis; father-in-law, Otis Farthing; sister-in-law, Kim Farthing; and niece, Sheri Ellis-Puttmann.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 North Court Street, Marion, Illinois.
The visitation will be at Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home on Monday, October 27, 2025 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and will resume on Tuesday, October 28, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
Following the time of visitation on Tuesday, the funeral service will be at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m.
Burial will follow in Salem Cemetery in Carrier Mills.
For those who wish to do so, memorials may be made to "Hospice of Southern Illinois" or "St. Jude Children's Research Hospital." Envelopes will be available at the funeral home or may be mailed c/o Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 North Court Street, Marion, IL 62959.
