Daniel Hulseapple Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc. - Middletown on Oct. 10, 2024.
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and preacher Daniel "Dan" L. Hulseapple of Middletown, NY passed away on October 8, 2024 surrounded by his family and loved ones after a nearly year-long battle with leukemia.
Dan is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rose Marie (Mitteer) Hulseapple; his three children Paul (Pam), Scott (Cheryl), and Wendy Coonradt; and his seven grandchildren Daniel (Natalia), Andrea, Zach, Jessa, Sam, Meagan, and Jake; his sister Barbara Maurizzio; his sister-in-law Kathy (Patrick) Clark, as well as several nieces and nephews. Dan was predeceased by his parents, Lawrence and Julia (Denton) Hulseapple; his sisters Joyce DeGraw and Ruth Parsons; and by brother Lawrence Hulseapple, Jr.
Dan was born at home on November 24, 1940. He was born crying, and according to his family, had not been quiet since. He attended Pilgrim Grammar School and graduated from Middletown High School in 1959. He met his bride-to-be, Rosie, at the wedding of close mutual friends Dick and Carol Terwilliger in 1966, where he told Dick "That's the woman I'm going to marry" before they even spoke. Dan made good on his word, and married Rosie in 1967. Thereafter the couple moved to North Carolina, where Dan completed his Bachelor's in English at Elon College. He also completed his Bachelor's and Master's in Divinity at Bangor Theological Seminary in 1967 and 2001, respectively.
After brief stints in NC and Franklin NY, Dan and Rosie settled down in their hometown of Middletown for much of their lives. Dan was a member of North Congregational Church his entire life. He worked as a social work assistant at Middletown Psychiatric Center for over 30 years, served as the Visiting Chaplain for Horton Hospital (now Garnet Medical Center), and was a member of a number of faith organizations, including the Diaconate Board, and the Greater Middletown Interfaith Council (a mantle worn by his father before him). Upon retiring from MPC, Dan served as Minister of Rosco and New Vernon United Churches of Christ.
In both his personal and professional lives, Dan was known for his compassion, his uncompromising sense of right and wrong, and a larger-than-life personality that never let you forget where he stood on any given topic.
Throughout his life, Dan's greatest joy was the time he spent with his loved ones, whether that was trying to get lost with his dear friend Dick as a young man, or fishing, sharing meals, and traveling with his wife, children, and grandchildren. It was precisely this love of the time spent with his family that contributed to Dan's greatest enduring legacy: to have known and been known by all of his grandchildren, each of whom can draw from a near endless storage of memories about time spent with their PA.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 7 pm on Friday, October 11, 2024 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc,130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Celebration of Dan's Life will be held at 11 am at North Congregational Church, North Beacon Street, Middletown, NY 10940. Burial will follow in the family plot in Wallkill Cemetery, 110 Midway Road, Middletown, NY 10940.
Arrangements are under the direction of Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc.
