Hawkins Funeral Homes - DecaturDaniel Barker Maeyers, 92, of Rhome, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 23, 2025, in Decatur, Texas.
A Celebration of Life will be held on January 10, 2026, at the Rhome Church of Christ. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM at the church, with the service following at 11:00 AM.
Dan was born on January 14, 1933, to Rupert Dale and Ella Burch (Barker) Maeyers in Decatur, Texas. He married the love of his life, Alta Lela Hancock, on July 1, 1956, in Marlin, Texas. In 1956, he graduated from Sam Houston State University with a degree in agriculture. Dan faithfully attended the Rhome Church of Christ from birth until his passing.
He began his career in 1957 at the First National Bank in Rhome, starting as a teller and working his way up to President. In 1971, Dan began his 40-year tenure at the First National Bank in Decatur, specializing in agriculture and business lending. He retired as Executive Vice President.
When the workday ended, Dan could always be found at the ranch - checking fences, tending to the cattle, and ensuring the herd had everything they needed. As the years passed, roundups shifted from horseback to four-wheelers, but his dedication never changed. He planted fields in the fall and harvested wheat, oats, and milo each summer.
Dan was active in his community, working with the Wise County Sheriff’s Posse during the annual rodeo and helping at the Wise County Youth Fair sale barn. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Wise County Soil and Conservation Board and the Deep Creek Cemetery Board.
In his spare time, Dan was most at home with a fishing rod in his hands. Whether catching catfish on the Trinity River, salmon in the rivers of the Northeast and Alaska, or trout in the Laguna Madre, he relished every moment. He was known for his famous catfish stink bait and took great pride in occasionally out-fishing the local guides on the Laguna Madre. Dan also enjoyed hunting deer, quail, and dove and was regarded as an excellent marksman. He generously shared his harvests of fish and game with family and friends.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Dale and Burch Maeyers; his wife, Lela Maeyers; and his sister, Marjorie Blaylock.
He leaves behind his daughters, Dana Clinesmith of Fort Worth, and Julianne Jones and husband David “Bird” of Rhome; grandchildren Marshall Berry and wife Monica of Ovilla, Mason Clinesmith and wife Marissa of Decatur, Rebecca Haire and husband Ryan of Decatur, and Seth Jones of Bedford; and Brent Cross, who was like a son, and his wife Shawna of Rhome. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren - Ezra, Leo, Ollie, and Wren Berry; Mia Clinesmith; and Addison Haire - along with extended family and a host of friends who will miss him dearly.
