Dr. Daniel E. Michel, 82, of Newburgh, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, December 26, 2023 at Linda E. White Hospice House.
Dan was born on June 12, 1941, to Louis E. Michel and Mary (Cook) Michel in Marion, OH. When he was eight years old, the family moved to Morgantown, WV, where he grew up and graduated from Morgantown High School. He received his undergraduate degree from West Virginia University, where he was a member of Mountain (the ranking men's student honorary) and Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. He graduated from the WVU School of Medicine in 1969 and completed an internship in Akron, OH, and a pediatric residency at the University of Michigan. He remained a loyal fan of the Mountaineers and the Wolverines throughout his lifetime.
He married his college sweetheart, Sharon, in 1966 and they shared 57 years together and had two children.
After his residency, Dan served two years at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino, CA, reaching the rank of Major. He then practiced pediatrics in Mt. Vernon, OH, before the family moved to Evansville in 1979. He spent the next 21 years teaching pediatrics to Deaconess Family Practice residents in addition to his private practice in pediatrics. He was a vital part of the Cystic Fibrosis Clinic and played a significant role in caring for those special patients. He enjoyed helping his patients stay healthy and had the honor of treating some of their children and grandchildren over the course of his career. He retired from medicine in 2010.
Dan was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, where he sang tenor in the chancel choir and attended the Men's Bible Study. His favorite hobbies included playing golf with friends, collecting model trains, reading history books and novels, traveling, and playing numerous games of Rummikub. After his retirement, he devoted many hours to volunteer work for Habitat for Humanity. He was a member of the local, state, and national medical associations; the American Board of Pediatrics and other organizations relating to his specialty; the Kennel Club; and the Rolling Hills Country Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, William Michel. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; his daughter, Catherine Kyle; his son, Robert Michel; his brother, Rev. Craig Michel; his sister-in-law, Dulcy Michel; his brother-in-law, John Nibert; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Dan's life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 30, 2023 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 5130 Lincoln Ave., Evansville, IN 47715 with Pastor Heather Foley officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.

Dr. Michel was a wonderful pediatrician. He cared for our first 3 children from 2004, until 2012 when he retired. He was so caring, kind, and patient to explain things, and eased worry of a first-time mom. We are so blessed to have known him and he will always hold a special place in our hearts for his role in our children“s healthcare. Peace and love to his wife and family.
