Daniel (Dan) Smith, 81, of Furley passed away Sunday, February 18, 2024. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Friday February 23, 2024 at Lamb Funeral Home, Whitewater Kansas.
Dan was born January 1, 1943 in Wichita, KS to Jerome and Betty (Stubbs) Smith. He spent his early life in Moline and Sycamore, Kansas, eventually moving to Planeview, where he was surrounded by aunts, uncles and many cousins. He attended West, South and Campus High schools. He joined the Air Force in 1961 and was stationed in Japan for four years during the Vietnam era.
Dan met Vivian (Brunn) Smith in Wichita, and they were married August 27, 1967. The couple settled in Furley, Kansas and made it their home for 57 years. Three children were born to the union: Danielle, Jason and Nathan.
During his career, Dan was employed at all Wichita airplane factories. His final working home was with LearJet for 35 years until retirement. Dan’s work history also included time as a sign painter for George Lay Signs, and he owned his own waterproofing company.
Dan was a devout Christian and lifelong student of the bible, becoming a member of Furley United Methodist Church. Dan also was a member of the American Legion, the Sons of the American Legion, and held many positions in both over his lifetime.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Vivian, children Danielle (Kent) Dodds of Andover; Jason (Sarah) Smith of Whitewater; and Nathan Smith of Derby; grandchildren WIlliam Smith, Darron Amon, Amanda Dodds, Toby Smith, Jason Smith Jr. and Cody Smith; brothers Jerome of Tucson, AZ; and Larry of Mill Creek, WA.
Services will be held Saturday, February 24, 2024 at 10 a.m. at Furley United Methodist Church, 11400 E 101st Street North (northeast corner of 101st Street & Greenwich Road). Burial will follow at Green Valley Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to American Legion Post 65, PO Box 222 Whitewater, Kansas 67154.
