David Haury Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Plumer-Gobber Funeral Home - Oberlin on Dec. 15, 2025.
David Lee Haury, 73, of Jennings, KS, passed away on December 12th, 2025. Dave was born on August 9th, 1952, to Bill and Marge (Plenert) Haury in Wichita, KS. Dave was raised in Wichita and graduated from West High School in 1970. Growing up, he loved hunting, fishing, playing baseball, running around with the neighborhood kids, playing outside, and pestering his siblings. He and his family made a lot of yearly trips to Jennings to hunt at the Votapka's. After high school, Dave entered the Army and trained as a paratrooper in the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, and infantryman in the 1st Infantry Division. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam.
After receiving an honorable discharge, he moved to Jennings and worked as a ranch hand for George and Mary Votapka. While in Jennings, he met the love of his life, Shirley Davis, a teacher at Jennings High School, and they were married on August 15th, 1975, in Buffalo, OK. After living in Jennings for a year, they moved to rural Valley Center, KS, where they lived for the next 40 years. Dave and Shirley raised four daughters, Jennifer, Brenda, Janet, and Katie.
Growing up, his girls had the most loving and giving dad, playing outside with them, roughhousing, shooting hoops, playing catch, having his little helpers in the shop, teasing them, coaching them in softball, and talking with them about life.
Dave enjoyed the outdoors--hunting, fishing, tending his gardens, and maintaining a tidy property.
He worked at Wichita State University for 29 years, making many friends across campus, retiring from the Electric Shop in 2011. Three years later, Dave moved to Jennings to begin renovation on their home in their dream location.
In retirement, he enjoyed visiting his girls and family in Wichita and Cottonwood Falls, drinking coffee outside in the mornings with Shirley, taking buggy rides, spotting wildlife, watching sunrises and sunsets, working in the shop, playing cards, tending his vegetable and flower gardens, checking his rain gauge, calling his friends about the rain, spending time with his bird dog, Scout, enjoying the wood burning stove in the shop, watching westerns, visiting with neighbors who stopped by, helping his friends with farming, and swimming with his grandkids. He was an active member of the Jennings American Legion Post 351. But, most of all, he loved staying home with Shirley.
Dave loved the Lord, and they attended the Assembly of God Church in Oberlin.
He is preceded in death by his dad, Bill Haury. He is survived by his mom, Marge Haury, Wickenburg, AZ; wife, Shirley of the home; daughters Jennifer Haury, Wichita, Brenda (Fayyaz) Khan, Wichita, Janet Haury, Cottonwood Falls, Katie Haury, Wichita; beloved grandchildren Piper and Oliver Khan, Wichita; sisters Rita (Britt) Small, Westcliffe, CO, Linda Finley, Wickenburg, AZ, and brother James (Judy) Haury, Sharps Chapel, TN; sisters-in-law Joyce (Ricky) Johnson, Edmond, OK, Sandra (Jackie) Shane, Buffalo, OK, and brother-in-law Clifford (Carolyn) Davis, Buffalo, OK, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 17, 2025 at Jennings United Methodist Church at 10:00AM. Visitation will be from 9:00-10:00AM at the church. Burial will be at Willow Creek Cemetery, Paruna Community, Buffalo, OK (314 NS 194 Rd, Buffalo, OK 73834). Condolences can be left at www.plumergobber.com.
