Daniel Arthur Speas, known affectionately as Dan to his friends and family, passed away of natural causes on June 26, 2025, in
Bradenton, FL, just three days after his 68th birthday. Born on June 23, 1957, in Springfield, IL, Dan was a man whose adventurous spirit and honest nature left an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Dan was the kind of guy who could light up a room with his laughter and fill any space with his larger-than-life presence. A graduate of Manatee High School, Class of '75, he was the guy who made the marching band cool and recognized for his exceptional talent in woodworking and machine shop classes. Dan's hands were as skilled as his heart was big, and his careers in carpentry and utilities were as much a testament to his work ethic as they were to his love for creating and fixing things.
But let's get to the good stuff-Dan's love for motorcycles. He could handle his knucklehead as if it were an extension of himself, and his trophy shelf was overflowing with awards from motorcycle rodeos. If there was a slow race, you'd bet your bottom dollar Dan was gliding to first place with the grace of a tortoise on two wheels. When he wasn't ruling the motorcycle circuits, he was a die-hard NASCAR fan and could often be found cheering on his favorite drivers with the same passion he brought to every aspect of his life. Fishing was another of Dan's passions, and he could be found with a rod in hand, casting lines with his siblings and children. Those moments weren't just about catching the biggest fish; they were about reeling in the best stories and memories that would last a lifetime.
Dan's family was the center of his universe. He was the beloved son of Rita Speas and the late James Speas, the brother who could always be counted on by Randall, Richard, and Rhonda Speas Strawn. Though his brother Michael predeceased him, the tales of their exploits together were the stuff of family legend. Dan's former wife, Charlotte, remained a cherished friend, and together they raised their daughter Sarah, who, along with her husband Jared Body, gave Dan the title of 'Grandpa' to the apple of his eye, Brynn. His daughter Laura, and boyfriend Eric Winchell, whom he shared many common interests with, added more joy to his life, ensuring there was never a dull moment.
To say Dan was adventurous, interesting, and honest would be an understatement. He was a man who lived life at full throttle, always ready for the next escapade. He had a knack for turning the mundane into the extraordinary. In these simple words often spoken by Dan, "I am what I am" his honest nature never left those around him questioning where they stood.
As we say goodbye to Dan, let's not mourn the miles he didn't travel but celebrate the incredible journey he had. His stories, his laughter, and his spirit will ride on in the hearts of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. So, here's to Dan-a man who was truly one of a kind, whose personality was as grand as the life he led. Ride on, Dan, ride on.
