Obituary of Daniel G. Stecher
Daniel passed away at his sister's home in Olympia, Washington, on August 14, 2023, following a long illness.
Dan was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on February 4, 1950, and was the second child of John F. and Ione D. Stecher. He spent his childhood in Caldwell, Idaho, and was in constant contact with many of his high school friends up until the end. While living on 40 acres outside of Caldwell, Dan was active in 4H and raised hogs and sheep for show at the Canyon County Fair.
Dan attended Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, where he met the love of his life, Charlene "Charly" Lam. Charly and Dan were married in 1976 in Honolulu and spent their early days of marriage in Santa Monica, California, before moving to Seattle.
Dan graduated with degrees in Chemistry and English from the University of Washington, and he was a lifelong Husky football fan. He also obtained his MBA from Pepperdine University. Dan used his education to form a small business, Flex Proof, in Seattle; he obtained several patents dealing with chemical compounds and carbon sequestration.
He and Charly moved to Gig Harbor, Washington, in 2001, and they loved their home on Wollochet Bay, where they enjoyed their neighbors, as well as boating and fishing on the Puget Sound. Upon the passing of Charly in February 2020, Dan moved to Olympia to live with his sister, Beth, and her husband, Paul Berendt.
Dan is survived by his five siblings and many beloved nieces and nephews in Washington and Hawaii and his Wisconsin cousins, including his cousin, Kurt Dey. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charly, and his parents.
Donations may be made in Dan's name to the Union Gospel Mission in Olympia or the Maui Strong Fund, sponsored by the Hawai'i Community Foundation, which is aiding the victims of the devastating fires on Maui.
