It is with great sadness that we, his family, announce the death of Daniel Textoris.

Daniel Andrew Textoris suffered a cardiac arrest the morning of July 25 and died peacefully that evening surrounded by his entire family at the SECU Jim and Betsy Bryan Hospice Home.

He was born in Cleveland, Ohio January 19, 1936, the third child of Mary Susan Benco and Andrew Joseph Textoris. His parents joined siblings and immigrated to America from Klenovec, Slovakia in the early 1920s and were married in Cleveland. Andrew had been a POW in Siberia during WWI. There, he learned the trade of shoe repair which served him well as a lifetime career. They were active in the Slovak community and in their Slovak Lutheran church. Their first infant son, Ivan, died. Later they became parents of a daughter, Lillian, and son, Daniel. His father suffered from what we now call PTSD, and took his life when Daniel was just nine years old. His mother worked very hard and provided a loving and caring home for her children.

Daniel attended Cleveland City schools graduating from James Ford Rhodes High School, and received his BA degree from (Case) Western Reserve University, MS degree in sedimentary geology at The Ohio State University and a Ph.D. in carbonate geology from the University of Illinois. In 1965, he and his family arrived in the village of Chapel Hill where he spent his professional career, first as an Assistant Professor and later as a Full Professor. He administered a $10M NSF grant and later became Assistant Dean of Research Administration. In 1978 he worked with the Department of Energy in Washington, DC. He has published extensively including his research on carbonate petrology, sedimentary diagenesis, origin of sedimentary cherts, petrology of Castle Hayne Limestone, and Triassic rift basin rocks. He was faculty advisor to many, many UNC geology students. He consulted and served on numerous geological committees, including Chairman Board of Directors Oak Ridge Associated Universities. After retiring, he served on the OWASA Board, and Animal Protection Society and International Visitors Center, and continued as an Usher at Binkley Baptist Church.

Along with loving and caring for his human family, all his life he loved his dogs, especially the succession of 4 rescued Great Danes. Additionally, we must add his love for dark chocolate!

The family served as hosts to UNC students from all over the world. This was a most rewarding and enriching experience for each family member. We remain connected to our friends around the world.

In 1959 he married his college sweetheart student nurse Linda Anne Keep in Meadville, PA., who stood by his side through 64 wonderful years of devoted love and commitment. They are proud parents of Steven Daniel Textoris of Reston, VA, James Edwin Textoris (Barbara Burroughs) Southport, N.C. and Ann Elizabeth Textoris Jacobs (Scott) of Savannah, GA. He cherished his 5 grandchildren, Zoe Alexandra (Broderick Koch) and Sophia Danielle Textoris, Andrew James Textoris, and Grace Marienka and Lindsey Keep Jacobs.

We have all enjoyed so many trips to other countries-learning their ways and culture, time away in our mountain log cabin, and just days before his death, our annual Textoris pilgrimage to Sunset Beach.

He was predeceased by his parents, brother Ivan, his brother-in-law William Toennies, two nieces Wendy and Brittany Toennies. Along with his immediate family, he is survived by his sister Lillian Toennies and her children, grandchildren and great granddaughters.

Donations may be given to Binkley Church Pastor Fund, Habitat for Humanity Weavers Grove or your favorite charity.

A Celebration of his Life is planned for August 19 at 2:00 p.m. at Binkley Baptist Church, Chapel Hill, N.C. The event will be livestreamed at https://binkleychurch.org/.

Cara Textoris- yes indeed you are related to my dear Daniel. His father, Andrew, was a brother to John. They were both from Klenovec, Slovakia. Email me and I can give you more information [email protected]

I´m so very sorry for your loss. I wonder if Daniel was a relative of mine? I am a Textoris, and was born in Cleveland, OH. My grandfather was John Textoris, (born 1916) whose parents immigrated from Slovakia and who also attended Rhodes High School. My father is David Textoris, born in 1950. My relatives are still largely in Cleveland, although I live in Washington myself. There are so few people who share the last name that I am always curious about those who do.

The Other
When some men are young
they might hang around together.
They might share similar interests
Sports Cars Girls Partying...
But other young men want to share
what they studying, learning.
They might even bring over
a chemistry set.
A trilobite, a brachiopod.
Some petrified wood to show to
a nine-year-old tomboy. Their niece.
I knew such a young man.
He was my Uncle Dan.

We lost a gentleman and scholar friend with Dans passing. He leaves only fine memories that lift spirits. My friendship with Dan was born at UNC and later renewed at Carol Woods. As a UNC student I learned in Professor Textoris petrology class. Gus Wilson, a classmate there later made a lifetime career in carbonate rock petrology, in part from skills learned from Dan.
Another story is that Dan acted as geologic consultant to a Philadelphia seaport dredging outfit to deepen the navigation channel, Wilmington, NC port. My small helping part included field work made instructive and fun by Dan.
Years later wife Marta and I as Coloradans, became friends with Linda and Dan. By happy coincidence my mother was a CW resident where the Textorises owned a cottage. During our annual visits, fun mutual dinning happened in CW dining hall. Linda and Marta are both graduates of Case Western Reserve University nursing program, another common thread. We will miss Dan and offer condolences to Linda and the entire Textoris family.

I'll remember Dan so fondly - just such a lovely person and beautiful smile and great hugs! He gave me a Ukraine button which I wear, and it will be a tangible reminder of what a good person he was.

Daniel Textoris had a profound and infectious love for life and lived it to the fullest right to the end. He taught so many of us by example that life is too precious to be wasted and that we should always pursue our dreams with love, kindness, and compassion.

So, let´s honor Dan´s legacy by carrying his values forward. Let us strive to be kinder, more compassionate, and more understanding in his honor. Let us embrace life´s challenges with the same grace and strength that Dan so wonderfully demonstrated.

Dan, my old buddy and great pal: How many times have we shared a small joke at your warm home or an aside at Ole Boys Breakfast? How often have we compared our aging body parts (particularly ye olde tickers) and been grateful for the moment? We go back a long ways, my friend, with our wonderful wives and good mutual friends. I am still talking in present tense because you are still with me and who knows when I will be joining you. Our birthdays are six months apart and our sense of what's important in life is congruent. We could always raise the other's smile with the recognition about our shared views of love, family, sports, and the irrelevance of religion yet the importance of being part of the Binkley community. We both have a been lucky lads to live to 87, maybe because of our dependency on the skills of our docs and the fast moving pace of available life sustaining phamacology. It is funny to think how you were so rooted in the lore of old rocks and sedimentary strata, and yet how you became a rock yourself in the guise of a friend to so many humans -- in fact, everyone who knew you well. Goodbye, my Danny Boy.

I have known Daniel since kindergarten. What a pleasure. His years of work are so very impressive. He has contributed so much. My husband and I were delighted to have shared schooling with him. God be with you, Linda and your family.

I was one of the many students mentored by Dan, who was on my thesis committee in 1980. I remember him as a great geologist and a fair and decent person. I never heard a cross word from him and he dealt with my rather strong personality like the consummate gentlemen he was. I still tell stories to friends about one of his great but very tough questions on my written Masters exam - Describe the geologic history of algae! That question alone took me 2 hours to answer, but it was a brilliant question! My deepest condolences to the family for their loss, and to all of us who benefited so much from Dan's guidance, decency, and fairness during our time in Chapel Hill. The attached photo was taken in late 1980 in eastern North Carolina in Tim Griffin's field area. That was a great trip.
