Daniel Lee Waln, 34 of North Wilkesboro, NC left us far too soon July 16, 2025. Daniel was born in Watauga County on September 1, 1990, to Kim Marie Waln. Daniel graduated from Ashe County High School in 2009. He then obtained his BS in physical education from Appalachian State University in 2013. Daniel pursued his dreams of coaching college basketball at Lees McRae College from 2014-2018 as the assistant men's coach and recruiting coordinator. Coastal Carolina was his next stop, then on to Catawba College where his team won two conference championships and one tournament championship. Most recently, Daniel was an assistant coach at Saint Leo University in Saint Leo, Florida.
Daniel was a gifted athlete. He was named Ashe County High School's Athlete of the Year and conference football player of the year. In addition, he won numerous championships and other accolades in basketball, football and baseball. Throughout the years, Daniel enjoyed friends, family and all forms of competition.
Daniel's dedication to his players and colleagues went beyond the court-he served as a mentor and a source of encouragement to all who crossed his path. Known for his infectious enthusiasm, he built lasting relationships that extended well beyond the game.
Daniel is survived by his mother, Kim Marie Waln, his aunts Terry Hodges (Mike) and Janet Waln, Uncle David Waln, his cousins Kristen Hodges, Lonnie Hodges, Bobby Hodges (Amanda), Eldalynn McNeill (Boo), Alaina McNeill (Bam Bam), Devyn, Eden, Zoe, Harley, Malachi and Silas Hodges, Kevin McAbee and Candace McAbee-Johnson, Donte, Troy, Pierce and Roman Waln. Also surviving, his loving girlfriend, Brittany Brooks.
Our deepest appreciation to Daniel's extended family, the Lemly and Furches families for all they have done throughout the years. You will always be cherished and never forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Daniel Waln Scholarship Fund at Ashe County High School c/o Brian Hampton.
