Daniel Stephen Westhoff

Daniel Stephen Westhoff, 69, of Salem passed away on January 8, 2025, at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls after a lengthy battle with cancer. Funeral mass will begin at 10:30 am on Monday, January 13 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Salem. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be held from 5 – 7 pm on Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 pm, at Kinzley Funeral Home.
Daniel (Dan) Westhoff was born on September 19, 1955, to Eugene and Bernette (Weber) Westhoff in Sioux Falls, SD. He attended St. Mary's grade school and graduated from Salem High School. Dan went on to attend Mitchell Tech and SDSU, studying the fields of accounting and economics. He left SDSU to come home and run the family farm after his father passed away in 1978. Dan married Donna (Cromwell) on May 30, 1981, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Salem. They raised four children on the farm east of Salem and farmed together until Donna's passing in 1995. After this loss, Dan continued farming and raised his children still living at home. Dan's son, Paul, eventually joined him in farming.
Dan was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He served as the Richland Township Clerk and on the St. Mary's School Board for many years.
Dan is survived by: his children, Danielle (Cameron) Westhoff Smith and their children, Daniel, Cecilia, and Adeline of St. Paul, MN, Scott (Melissa) Westhoff and their children, Kolby and Brooke of Sioux Falls, Lynette (Tyler) VanEmmerik and their children, Claire, Noah, and Connor of Sioux Falls, and Paul (Shaina) Westhoff and their children, Paul, William, Tessa and Ruby of Salem; siblings, David Westhoff, Connie (Dwane Wylie) Westhoff, Mary (Mike) McHugh, Rachelle (Bob) Barrett, Denise (Joe) O'Neill, Karen (Dan Rogers) Westhoff, Ken (Paige) Westhoff, and Kristi (Chris) Waechter; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Donna.
