Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31
Dan Wilcox was born on August 14, 1978 and died on February 10, 2024 at the age of 45. Throughout his life he was happy, fun-loving and cared about all those around him. His laugh was contagious.
Always a kid at heart, Dan loved being with kids, which is why he devoted his life to coaching, mentoring, and teaching. Dan was a mentor who loved pouring himself into others through coaching and teaching, always bringing out the best in his students. Dan believed life was not just about reaching his goals but it was about helping other people reach their goals both in sports and life.
Dan was remembered as "a thought provoking teacher (not just in course material but in real life lessons too) who used humor to make learning fun". One of Dan's students wrote: "You taught me what it meant to be a man, a father, a husband, a mentor, and most importantly just a good freaking human being."
Dan was never happier than when he was with his family. His legacy lives on through his beloved wife and three sweet girls. His wife, Tracy carries his strength, courage and warrior determination. Jayden, his eldest daughter, carries his sweet, smart and caring side. Callyn, his middle daughter, carries his love of life and laughter. Ainsley, his youngest daughter, carries his deep love of others.
A few months after he was diagnosed with brain cancer, Dan said "what is courage without a challenge." Dan was a warrior in his battle against cancer. His motto was "F*#k Cancer"! He fought hard until the end through two tumors, countless MRI's, chemo, radiation and multiple other treatments. He was a model of determination and strength throughout his 3 ½ year fight. In death he continues to be a warrior against brain cancer. One of Dan's final wishes was to donate his brain to further research. Dan's desire to help others was never ending.
Dan always said he wanted to die with a brain tumor not from a brain tumor. In the end, it was his great big heart that failed due to his treatments. On his last day Dan's room was never empty as family and friends visited. Dan was surrounded by love all day and died peacefully just moments after all four of his girls told him they love him. He is survived by his wife Tracy, 3 girls, Jayden, Callyn, and Ainsley, his mother Linda, his brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, and countless co-workers, students, supporters and friends.
We give thanks for Dan's presence in the world – we are grateful for the positive ripple effects of his life. We trust that love weaves our lives together in ways we cannot fully comprehend.
Dan's life will be celebrated on Saturday, February 17th, 2024 at V's Pizza in Fleming Island beginning at 11:00am. You may also join Dan's family and friends in a 5K walk on Sunday at 9:00am for Head for the Cure. Register Here
