Daniel Eugene Woodlund, 74, of Marshalltown formerly of Madrid, passed away on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
Daniel was born October 10, 1948, son of Albert Ellroy and Laura Jean (Little) Woodlund. He received his education in the Madrid School and graduated in 1967. Daniel was active in the cross country and track programs in high school. He was on the 1965 State Championship Cross Country team and the State Championship Mile Relay team.
On May 28, 1948, Daniel entered the United State Army and served his country during the Vietnam War until his discharge on May 27, 1970. He then returned to Madrid and was employed at the Oscar Mayer plant in Perry, IA.
Daniel had three children born to their mother Shari Zander and they remained friends over the years.
He enjoyed playing slow pitch softball, watching the Iowa State Cyclones, New York Yankees and was instrumental in establishing a Fantasy Baseball group.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Ronald Johnsen.
Daniel is survived by three children, Jasey Zander of Boone, Lacey Zander of Ankeny, and Acey Zander of Madrid, two sisters, Sharon Winter and Janice Johnsen both of Madrid, three brothers, Kenny (Roselyn) Woodlund and Donald Woodlund both of Woodward and William (Carol) Woodlund of Madrid and several nieces and nephews. He has two grandsons, Dominic and Alekk. He loved being called Grandpa, which would make his face light up.
A Memorial Gathering will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, April 2, 2023, at the VFW in Madrid, private family burial at the Hopkins Grove Cemetery in rural Madrid.
