Danny Lee Mathers, age 73, entered into rest peacefully on August 19, 2023. The family will hold a private service at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.  Danny was a decorated United States Army Veteran and will receive a burial with military honors at Florence National Cemetery in a private service for his family.

MSG Danny Lee Mathers was born on February 8, 1950, in Portsmouth, Virginia, a son of the late June Irene Mathers and Harry Edwin Mathers. He started his army career at the young age of 17 where he served over 20 years.  During that time, MSG Mathers became one of the most crafted in many areas of service and served in Special Operations as a member of the United State Army’s elite Delta Force.  Danny was a highly decorated war hero, and he was truly a soldier at heart.  Danny embodied the meaning of the word from the time he took his oath until he left this world.  Danny worked hard to provide the best life for his family; he and his oldest and only daughter, Christina, enjoyed spending time together and cooking for the family and he loved her meals despite the “messes” they made together in the kitchen.   He enjoyed playing the guitar, fishing and spending time with his son, Alan, and grandson, Joseph, and enjoyed spending each day with the love of his life, Susan, and their fur babies.  Danny was known by many names, “Dad”, “Buzz”, but his favorite was always “Granddad,” and you could see the love he had for his grandson as his eyes lit up when they were together.

MSG Mathers was a decorated US Army Ranger.  He served this country proudly for over half of his life in several areas all over the world.  He fought in the Vietnam War, the Cold War as well as did several special missions in the Middle East, Central America, South America, Korea and many other places all over the globe.  When he wasn’t on an assignment, he assisted Chesterfield County and the State Guard in several special ops trainings as well.  Although he was a proud soldier with the heart of a warrior, he was just as humble; each time someone would thank Danny for his service, he would always say, “I’m not the one who deserves gratitude. My brothers who paid the ultimate sacrifice deserve all the glory.”  His family and his brothers in the service take comfort that Danny has now joined the final formation of the Rangers in the sky.

In addition to his parents, Danny was preceded in death by his brother, Terry Edwin Mathers as well as several fur babies whom he loved as his own children including “Tobie”, “Opie”, “Beamer”, “Cassie”, “Missy” and many more.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Susan Mathers of the home; one son, Alan (Brittany) Mathers; one daughter, Christina Mathers; two brothers, Mark (Stacey) Mathers, and Harry “Eddie” (Jenny) Mathers; two sisters, Mary (Clyde) Miller and Victoria “Vickie” (Donnie) Wright; and one grandson, Joseph “AJ” Mathers.

Memorials may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.
