Darrel Hesby Obituary Darrel Hesby, age 90, longtime resident of Wayzata, MN passed away on March 31, 2025, in Plymouth, MN of natural causes.
He was born on July 11, 1934, in Halstad, MN to parents, J. Allen and Joyce (Peterson) Hesby. Darrel attended Minnesota State University Moorhead, where he played both basketball and baseball, and received a degree in mathematics and physical education in 1956. He married Janet Sulerud also from Halstad, MN (they were classmates from grade 1 through grade12) in August 1956, and they had two children, Jay Hesby and Jill Klitzke. Darrel taught 9th grade math in Wayzata Public Schools for over 30 years (all in the same building now Wayzata West Middle School) and also coached basketball and baseball. Darrel had a deep love for sports and played competitive basketball into his 50s and recreational basketball at the Ridgedale YMCA into his 70s.
Darrel is survived by his wife of 68 years, Janet Hesby; children Jay (Wendy) Hesby and Jill (Tom) Klitzke; grandchildren Shea Klitzke, Marshall (Hannah) Klitzke, Sally (Yair) Carvajalino, and Jamin Hesby; and great grandson, Leonardo Carvajalino, with baby girl Carvajalino expected to arrive in July. Darrel was preceded in death by his parents, J. Allen and Joyce (Peterson) Hesby and granddaughter, Lucy Hesby.
Visitation (10:00am) and service (11:00am) will be on Saturday, April 5, 2025 at Speak the Word Church International, 515 Jersey Ave S in Golden Valley with reception following. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Wayzata, MN.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wayzata Education Fund.
