Darrell R. Caudill, M.D.
Darrell Rodney Caudill peacefully passed away at home surrounded by family on December 20, 2024. Dr. Caudill is survived by his wife, Helen, his five children, Darrell (Vel), Chad (Natalie), Travis, Michael, and Lindsey, his five grandchildren, Katelyn (Marcus), Grayson, Carter, Lucy, and Emma, his sister, Carin, and the mother of his three oldest children, Joan. He is a 1959 graduate of Butler University and a 1963 graduate of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
Dr. Caudill joined the United States Army Reserve in 1964. On May 13, 1968, the 311th Field Hospital, of which Dr. Caudill was a member, was activated by President Johnson. Dr. Caudill was promoted to the rank of Major with a Military Occupational Specialty of C3150 "General Surgeon." His unit initially shipped to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, undergoing fourteen weeks of specialized training in anticipation of deployment to Vietnam. Upon arrival in Vietnam, the 311th was split into two units. Dr. Caudill was assigned to "Hospital Unit #1, 311th Field Hospital," and he deployed to Quy Nhon. His unit typically handled three scheduled surgeries each day, as well as fresh casualties brought in directly from dustoff. He spent ten months in Vietnam before his unit returned to Cincinnati and was released from active duty. Dr. Caudill was honorably discharged on August 10, 1969, and he received the following awards: Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal. Dr. Caudill is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.
In 1973, Dr. Caudill moved to Atlanta practicing cardiothoracic surgery at Georgia Baptist Hospital (Atlanta Medical Center) and later at Saint Joseph's Hospital. In 2006, Dr. Caudill became a full-time vein specialist and served as Medical Director of VeinInnovations.
Darrell was an avid fan of Butler University Basketball, the Atlanta Braves, Falcons, and Flames, University of Georgia Football as well as the PGA Tour. He frequently enjoyed a late-night pizza following a lengthy day of enduring these teams' performances, both high and low. He also enjoyed listening to Jazz, Bluegrass, Rock & Roll and Classical music. Dr. Caudill loved playing golf and was proud of his three holes-in-one during his time on the course. His larger than life personality will be greatly missed by family and friends.
In remembrance of Darrell's life and legacy, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation (t2t) or Wounded Warrior Project. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date.
