Darrell Kent Jonas was born on June 3, 1956, into a large, loving family. Despite being the second youngest of 6 children, he was the firm foundation for his family even as a young boy. He was a mountain of a man with a tough as nails exterior but had the most generous and loving heart on the inside. Darrell went to be with the Lord on October 20, 2023.
He is preceded in death by his father, Edgar Jonas; mother, Amanda Jonas; brother, Billy Pat Jonas; father-in-law, Corky Corcoran; and brother-in-law, Robert Fox.
He is survived by his wife, Terry Corcoran Jonas; his son, Brian Jonas, and daughter-in-law, Jana Jonas; his granddaughters, Hallie and Emma Jonas; his sisters, Patty Buck, Sharon (Fred) LaGreca, Nita Fox, and Debbie (Ray) Merchant, his mother-in-law, Martha Corcoran; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Bobby (Erin) Corcoran, Billy (Jana) Corcoran, Bonnie (Marty) Martinez, and Tommy (Denise) Corcoran; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A Boerne resident his entire life, Darrell often joked that he "bled purple" for his beloved Boerne Greyhounds. He grew up an athlete playing football for the Hounds. In 1974, he met and fell in love with Terry Sue Corcoran and in 1975, they were married.
In 1983, Darrell and Terry welcomed their son Brian into the world. Brian was Darrell's pride and joy. Where Darrell went, Brian followed. He taught Brian to hunt, fish, swing a hammer, and play ball. Darrell loved being a father, and he was a great one. Darrell spent over a decade coaching Brian's Boerne Little League and Boerne Junior Football League teams, where it wasn't just about coaching ball players, but helping young men learn respect, integrity, and the value of hard work on and off the field.
There was no harder worker than Darrell Jonas. He took tremendous pride in his work and was a jack of all trades. He began his career as a young welder for Fincke Welding before deciding to go to fire school. He began his more than 3 decade long firefighting career as a 16 year old volunteer fireman with the Boerne Fire Department. He began his full-time firefighting career with the Castle Hills Fire Department where he retired in 2005 after 27 years of service. On his days off from the fire station, Darrell worked as a carpenter building and remodeling homes alongside his good friend Lloyd Stahl and working at the Meat Market during hunting season with the Waldeck family.
After retiring from the fire department, Darrell went to work as a foreman on the 141 Ranch near Junction, Texas. The 141 Ranch was his second home, and he knew it like the back of his hand. He loved hunting, fishing and swimming at the ranch with his family, especially his two granddaughters, Hallie and Emma. His granddaughters were the light of his life. Just as with his son, it brought Darrell great joy spending time in the great outdoors with his girls, especially as a spectator at their sporting events. Of his many accomplishments, being an amazing father and grandfather ranked at the top.
The family is so thankful that he got to enjoy the trip of a lifetime to Yellowstone National Park this summer. The memories made with his family on that trip are ones they will cherish forever. Darrell will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be held at Ebensberger Fisher Funeral Home in Boerne, Texas on Friday, October 27, 2023, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Ebensberger Fisher Funeral Home on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. followed by a graveside service at the Boerne Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Kendall County Fairgrounds in Boerne, Texas and all are welcome.
