He was born November 13, 1952, in Ogden, Utah to Newell and Darthel Love. Darrell had five brothers and two sisters. He married his first wife and was blessed with two children, D. Gene and Joanna, they later divorced. He married Gaylene Lott Love on September 24, 2004, in Brigham City, Utah. They were later sealed in the Logan LDS Temple.

Darrell was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, holding many callings through the years.
