Dave was a quiet man with gruff appearance and a wonderful, gentle sense of humor. We was doing field work for a MS in geology in '88, I was taking an undergraduate class. Dave was an early riser. I'm a sucker for animals. My morning alarm became Dave sitting in the yard with a cup of coffee in front of the housing the university provided. A kitten would come around and he'd tell it "Tell mama to get up and feed you" - and it would "talk back" to him. A far more pleasant way to be awakened than any alarm clock!
