David Daniel Beckom

Blaine - David Daniel Beckom, 72, passed away unexpectedly, Monday, July 17, 2023, at his home in Blaine. He was born January 23, 1951, in Lexington, NC, the son of WD and Carleen Beckom, and also raised by his stepfather, TS Creech. David was the middle child with two older brothers, Robert and Karl, and two younger sisters, Gail and Aline.
David was predeceased by his parents, stepfather, and two siblings, Karl and Gail. He is survived by his wife Gayle, his two sons, Parker Beckom and Steve Beckom, Steve's wife Jennifer and their three children: Kadence, Dillan, and Evan, as well as a menagerie of four legged furry children.
An avid learner at an early age, David could often be found in the back of his aunt's bookmobile devouring novels. He joined the U.S. Army and served with the3/5 Cav, 9th Infantry Division, serving two tours in Vietnam. Among his collection of medals are two Purple Hearts, a CIB, and a Bronze Star.
While a patient at the VA Hospital in Fayetteville, NC, he met a Northern Maine woman who would become his life partner for thirty-six years, Gayle (Grew) Beckom. Gayle worked in the hospital commissary and after falling for David's southern charm, the two were married in the hospital chapel before moving back to Gayle's hometown of Mars Hill, Maine.
David was a talented writer who wrote short stories, news articles, and numerous publications for local political campaigns. He was also a musician and songwriter later in life, recording two CD's and creating music for others to perform, while also winning awards for his work. He was also an animal lover and a dedicated sports fan, unwaveringly supporting the Tar Heels and Braves.
David was known and will be remembered for his ability to make his loved ones laugh, make friends with total strangers and generous heart. Those that were lucky enough to have known David knew that he would never let you leave the house without a hug and an "I love you".
