David Eugene Cody, age 86, of Graham, North Carolina, passed away peacefully in the stillness of the night on March 12, 2026.

Born on March 6, 1940 in Burlington, North Carolina, he was the son of Lester Cody and Ella Mae Cody. He was known for his gentle spirit, quiet strength, and unwavering devotion to the people he loved-and for his lifelong loyalty and enthusiasm to the North Carolina Tar Heels.

He spent his career as an accountant and retired with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, where he was admired for his professionalism, integrity, and steadfast work ethic. After retiring, he continued to support his community by preparing taxes, working at Loaves and Fishes offering trusted guidance to friends, neighbors, and long-time clients.

He is survived by his children, Jeffrey David Cody and his wife, Kay Mobley-Cody, and Scott Edward Cody and his significant other, Laurel Mise; his granddaughter, Brooke A. Cody, daughter of Scott; and his sisters, Linda Wells and her husband, Cyrus Wells, and Gloria Martin, wife of the late Dennis Martin, a niece and a nephew, the children of Linda and Cyrus; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his former wife, Sandra Starnes Cody, with whom he shared two sons.

In addition, the family acknowledges Ida Montgomery, finance, a cherished companion of 27 years whom he affectionately called "my sweetie," and whom he loved and adored.

A heartfelt note of appreciation is extended to the compassionate staff of HomePlace of Burlington-especially those in the Memory Care Unit-for the dignity, kindness, and attentive care they provided.

A service honoring his life will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2026 at Rich & Thompson Funeral Home in Graham at 2:00 pm with visitation beginning at 12:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St Judes Children's Hospital or Paralyzed Veterans of America in his memory.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for his generosity, quiet strength, devotion to family, and proud Tar Heel spirit.
