"Together Again"
David Henderson Coyne
David Henderson Coyne, age 93, of Mentor, Ohio, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2025. Born on July 6, 1931, to Isabella and Thomas Coyne, David was the fourth of nine children. Raised during the Great Depression, he became known as the peacemaker of his large family-a role he continued to embody with warmth, kindness, and humility throughout his life. He was drafted and served in the Army, Korean War with an honorable discharge.
David was married to his beloved wife, Erna Schmitt, and together they raised eight children. They were a close-knit family, often found at swim meets, where David cheered on his children, all of whom were on the swim team. Summers at Mabel's cottage in Canada were a cherished tradition, filled with laughter and family memories that lasted a lifetime.
David's deep love and devotion to Erna were the foundation of their 60 years together, and their bond was one of unwavering respect and affection.
A proud Irishman, David took great joy in celebrating his heritage. His pride was evident when he was named Irishman of the Year during a St. Patrick's Day parade-an honor he treasured.
A hardworking and dedicated pipefitter Cleveland Local,120. David spent many years working alongside relatives and friends, forming strong bonds with both family and colleagues. After Erna's passing, David continued to enjoy the simple pleasures in life, such as dining at Yours Truly Restaurant, watching The Rifleman, and visiting his older sister Rose every weekend to watch football and reminisce about their childhood.
David is now reunited with his wife, Erna, three daughters, and grandsons A.J. and David H. Coyne II. He is survived by his children, David (Sherie), Lorna (Patrick), Tom (Stephanie), Colleen (Kenneth) and Jack (Laurie), two brothers, two sisters, 17 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family. David's legacy of love, devotion, and generosity will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20 at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 38001 Euclid Ave., Willoughby. Funeral Mass will take place 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 8560 Mentor Ave., Mentor.
David will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love, laughter, and commitment to family will never be forgotten.
