David Paul Emerson, age 88, of Sodus, Michigan, passed away on March 30, 2026. He was born on August 15, 1937, in Coloma, Michigan, and lived a life marked by love, faith, and devotion to his family and community.
David was a loving, kind, and faith-filled man who carried himself with quiet strength and a generous spirit. He was a Christian and a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church of Berrien Springs, where his faith remained an important part of his life. Those who knew him will remember his steady presence, his warm heart, and the way he made others feel welcome and cared for.
He married the love of his life, Joanne Agnes Sutter, on July 25, 1959, in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Together they built a life centered on family, commitment, and shared memories. Joanne preceded him in death, along with his parents, Paul Stanley Emerson and Alice Alwena Bauschke Emerson, and his brothers, Donald Bruce Emerson and Dale Malcolm Emerson. Their passing leaves a deep absence, but their love and influence remain woven into the lives of those who survive him.
David is survived by his five children, Michael Emerson and his wife Karen, Diane Ball, Robert Emerson, Debra Nelson and her husband Bill, and Thomas Emerson (Kimberly Craig). He also leaves behind four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him great joy and pride. His family was the center of his world, and he treasured every moment spent with them.
For many years, David worked in the trucking industry as a dispatcher, a profession that reflected his strong work ethic and dependable nature. He approached his work with dedication and responsibility, and he carried those same qualities into every part of his life. He was known for being steady, hardworking, and true to his word. Later in life he worked for many years part-time at Indian Lake Golf Course.
In his free time, David enjoyed golfing, gardening, reading, and spending time with simple pleasures that brought him happiness. He was a devoted University of Michigan, Chicago White Sox, and Chicago Bears fan, and he enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing cards, and Yahtzee. These interests reflected his love of companionship, friendly competition, and quiet moments well spent.
David Paul Emerson will be remembered with love and gratitude by all who knew him. His life was a testament to faith, family, and kindness, and his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in David's honor to St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 429 Rosehill Rd., Berrien Springs, Michigan 49103.
