I knew Dave Haughey when I was a kid spending my summers at Port Sheldon on Lake Michigan. The Haugheys and the Schicks spent several summers in a cottage behind the one my parents owned. I vividly remember Dave sailing his pale blue wooden Sailfish with its blue and white striped sail on the big lake. It was his interest in sailing that got me hooked and into my own Sunfish a few years later. Dave, as has been mentioned, was an outstanding attorney and a gentleman. Very steady, kind and unflappable. It was my pleasure to know Dave while I was growing up. Best wishes to the family. As always, William and Saima Upham, St. Augustine, Florida.

As a lawyer in Grand Rapids, I tried cases with Dave including one on the memorable afternoon President Reagan was shot. He was a gentleman,
reliable guy and a credit to the profession. He was a close friend of my partner Buford A. Upham, another gentleman of that generation. Special regards to my Michigan classmate, Martha. Geoff Gillis

When I arrived at Smith Haughey in 1995 the firm had grown to nearly 70 lawyers, with Mr. Haughey serving as counsel and founder emeritus. His reputation as a trial lawyer preceded him, with Bud Roegge sharing stories of "setting up camp with Dave Haughey," and trying cases in distant county courthouses. I only learned the full story of his military service from this obituary, rendering his story even more distinguished. I am grateful for his "life well lived." Joe Rossi, Circuit Judge, Kent County

It was an honor to have worked at Smith Haughey as a law clerk, and to have had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Haughey. I was in law school at the time, and he was exceedingly kind to me. There is no doubt that he influenced my legal career. He leaves an incredible legacy for many lawyers.

As a young lawyer, I tried my first Federal Ct. case on behalf of the Plaintiff with David defending. He was terrific inasmuch as despite my youth and inexperience, he treated me as a peer and even gave me "courtroom demeanor" tips. For many years I would run across David in various courtrooms and bar functions and he was unfailingly friendly and we would reminisce about that "first case". He was a great gentlemen and a marvelous lawyer. A credit to his family, his community and his profession. Condolences to the family--we mourn your loss.

I helped take care of Mr. Haughey during the time he lived at Cook Valley. He was a special kind of gentleman. I know he will be missed by everyone who knew him. Best wishes to his family.
