David Einar Hedlund
Lansing, MichiganDavid E. Hedlund, known affectionately as Dave by his friends and family, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2025, in his hometown of
Lansing, Michigan. Born on October 11, 1934, in the same city he would live his entire life, Dave's journey was one marked by dedication, love, and an unwavering commitment to his family.
A proud graduate of J.W. Sexton High School, class of 1952, Dave's thirst for knowledge led him to attend Michigan State University. His education was briefly paused when he joined the United States Army, serving his country with honor. Upon his discharge, Dave returned to Michigan State University and completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Geography and Physical Science in 1959.
Returning to his roots, Dave joined the family business, Hedlund Plumbing, continuing the legacy established by his father. For over 50 years, he dedicated his life to the company and the community it served, becoming a respected figure in the industry. His commitment was also evident through his long-standing involvement with various business associations.
Dave's interests painted the picture of a man who embraced life. Alongside his wife Margaret, he embarked on journeys that spanned all 50 states and reached the diverse cultures of Europe and China. An avid card player, Dave's presence was a staple at his Bridge Club gatherings. His love of golf saw him spending many a day on the greens, and his fervor for Michigan State University sports was unmatched. However, it was his passion for meteorology that made him the go-to weatherman among family and friends. Dave's predictions were so spot-on that they became a crucial part of planning family events and travels. Along with Margaret, they were active members of their church, First Congregational Church of Portland, Michigan where he assisted with finances and community activities. Dave was known to be thoughtful and wise and only gave his opinion when he truly thought it was of value.
Above all, Dave's love for his family was the cornerstone of his life. He was a constant at the dinner table, regardless of the demands of business ownership. He instilled this devotion to family in his own three sons. His unwavering support for his children and grandchildren was evident in his time spent as a scout leader and in the countless hours at band concerts and sporting events, always their number one fan.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Einar and Evah (Spencer) Hedlund, his brother Howard Hedlund, and a brother-in-law John Hopkins.
He is survived by Margaret (Carlson), his wife of over 62 years; their three sons, Robert (Elizabeth) Hedlund with their four children, Adam Hedlund, Amanda (Omar Kandah) Hedlund, Danielle Wetherwax, and Angella Bollwahn, Thomas (Denise) Hedlund with their children Ashley (Josiah) Killam and Benjamin (Cassandra Ward) Hedlund, and David Jr. (Jennifer) Hedlund with their children Brady (Erin) Hedlund and Elizabeth Hedlund; two great-grandsons, Ethan and Aiden Wetherwax, a sister Nancy Hopkins, sister-in-law Judith Hedlund, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
