David Hillary, 78, of Sheldon, passed away on Monday, September 30, 2024, at the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 5, 2024, at the Eastside Cemetery in Estherville, IA, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post #91 and the VFW Post #3388 both of Estherville. Arrangements are under the direction of the Robinson Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. Online condolences may be left at www.spiritlakefuneralhome.com
David O. Hillary was born on October 16, 1945, to Osborne and Dorothy (Giffin) Hillary in Spirit Lake, IA. He graduated from Spirit Lake High School and earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Sioux Falls. He taught for 35 years at Sheldon Community Schools. He served his country during the Vietnam War in the US Army. Dave was united in marriage to Jean Peterson on August 9, 1969, at the United Methodist Church in Spirit Lake. Following his retirement from teaching, Dave worked for the City of Sheldon.
He was a member of the Lutheran Church in Sheldon and the Sheldon American Legion. In his free time, he enjoyed mowing and spending time with his grandchildren.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife Jean Hillary of Sheldon, IA; children John Hillary of Paulina, IA; Jennifer Kielman and her fiancé Josh Loerzel of Milford, IA; and Jill (Jake) Holz of Sheldon, IA; grandchildren Taylor her significant other Josh Biery, Keeston, Keely, Macade, Ella, Harper, and Karter; great grandchildren Bailey and Brayden.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Mary.
