David A. Hobson Jr. passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 1, 2025 following a courageous year-long battle with cancer.
Born on January 12, 1957 in Rockford, IL, Dave spent his childhood working the family farm in southern Wisconsin. After moving to McHenry, IL, Dave met his wife, Julie Miller. Together, they raised their two daughters Heather and Taylor. As a devoted "girl dad," he took pride in nurturing his girls' independence and encouraging their confidence through every stage of life. Becoming a grandpa in 2022 with the arrival of his granddaughter, Sydney, was his greatest joy.
Dave was happiest spending time with his family, going out to breakfast on Sundays, going to Menards, driving his Chevy truck, and working on projects in his "shop."
Carpentry was both his profession and his passion. Dave proudly established his own carpentry business at a young age. He quickly earned a reputation for his diligent work ethic and meticulous attention to detail. His insistence on quality craftsmanship left a lasting impression on both his customers and his fellow tradesmen.
Dave also worked for Miller Monument Company installing granite memorials for over 40 years. He shared a special bond with his father-in-law, John "Honky" Miller, who owned and operated the family business. Through that work he also became lifelong friends with Jamie Franklin. Dave continued to lend his experience and dedication to the company until just weeks before his passing.
Dave is survived by his wife, Julie; his daughters, Heather (Matt) LaCour and Taylor Hobson; his granddaughter, Sydney LaCour; and his "grand-dog" Stormy. He is also survived by his siblings Dan Hobson, Penny (Bill) Thompson, Don Hobson, and Doug (Marsha) Hobson; his sisters-in-law Jane (Marty) Keller and Judy Miller-Macri; his mother-in-law Betty Miller; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents David A. Hobson Sr. and Margaret Hobson; his father-in-law, John Miller; and his brother-in-law, Rocco Macri.
Dave will be deeply missed not only by his family but by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
His family would like to thank the staff at Mercyhealth hospital and JourneyCare for their unwavering support.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 12 from 4 - 8 pm at Colonial Funeral Home in McHenry, IL. To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of David, please visit our floral store.
