Mr. David John Kolo, age 76 of Chapel Hill, NC transitioned to eternal rest Thursday, June 13, 2024.
David Kolodziejczyk was born December 12, 1947, to the late John and Florence (Nowak) Kolodziejczyk in Toledo, Ohio. He legally shortened his last name to Kolo. Growing up, he attended Catholic school and graduated from Central Catholic High School in Toledo.
David was musically and instrumentally talented and also played guitar, banjo, and dulcimer. In high school, he enjoyed playing the tuba in the marching band. After high school, David enrolled in the United State Marine Corp and served a tour in the Vietnam War. Once discharged from the Marines, David traveled often, something he loved to do. He lived in Japan for a short period of time. He spent time in Canada where he married his first wife, Sharon O'Connor-Kolodziejczyk. They had a daughter, Joy. David also spent time working in the "bushes" in Manitoba, Canada as a logger.
In 1998, while in North Carolina he met Susan Johnson, who became his second wife. Although they are former spouses, they have remained friends and companions. David had twin stepdaughters: Deborah Cosentino and Mary Hummel. Susan and David took frequent trips to North Carolina beaches
On Thursday, June 13, 2024, David lost his battle with mental illness. While David had struggled with mental illness, he found help in 2019 and began living a fulfilling life. He enjoyed staying healthy by eating nutritious foods and walking. His love for nature and the outdoors grew. He enjoyed bird watching and observing the variety of animals such as deer and rabbits near his home. David liked to make people smile with a kind word or a joke. He devoted his time to Jesus, his Savior, studying the Bible, and daily devotions.
Surviving are longtime friend and former spouse, Susan Johnson of Pittsboro, North Carolina, former stepdaughters: Deborah (Carl) Cosentino of Pittsboro, North Carolina, Mary Hummel of Raleigh, North Carolina; nieces: Rachel Zufall, Karen Domenico, and Mary Albritton; and nephews Jeremy and Jason Szteiter. David was preceded in death by his parents, John and Florence Kolodziejczyk; his sisters, Carol Koperski and Marie Szteiter; his former first wife, Sharon O'Connor-Kolodziejczyk, and daughter, Joy Kolodziejczyk.
