David Henry Lockwood Sr., aged 76, of Bishopville, MD, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2025, surrounded by family and love.
Born on September 26, 1948, in Worcester County, MD, David was the beloved son of Walace Lockwood and Mary Brittingham. He grew up in Ironshire, MD, and graduated from Worcester High School in 1966 before serving honorably in the United States Army.
David made history as the first African American police officer for the Berlin Police Force, a testament to his courage and dedication to justice. Over the years, he worked as a bus driver for Worcester County Public Schools, a custodian at Stephen Decatur High School, and most recently, he held a position with the State of Maryland on Assateague Island.
David married the love of his life, his high school sweetheart, Rev. Dr. Helen Lockwood, with whom he shared 55 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they raised three children: their son, David Henry Lockwood Jr., son Lamont Grayson Lockwood, and their adopted daughter, Erlander Flood.
Preceding him in death are his parents; brothers, Edward Lockwood (survived by Mabel) and Robert Lockwood (survived by Connie); sister-in-law Vonda Briddell; son, Lamont Grayson Lockwood; and great-granddaughter, Nairobi Gibbs, whose memories remain deeply cherished by the family.
He is survived by sons David Henry Lockwood Jr, Alexander Sessoms (Keenya), Tony Donaway, and Donsha Dennis (NaTasha).
His legacy continues also through his beloved grandchildren: Brittiany Parrott (Raemond), Courtnei Lockwood, Di'mond Lockwood, David Henry Lockwood III, Thomas Fooks, Mariah Sessoms, Jamal Sessoms, Kyleigh Donaway, Damarian Donaway, and Jaxson Donaway. He also leaves behind great-grandchildren Aubry Johnson and Charleigh Goodman, each of whom holds special memories of his love and guidance.
David is also lovingly remembered by his surviving siblings, Pete Lockwood (Shirley) and Frances Lockwood, as well as his in-laws: parents-in-law John and Emma Briddell, and sister-in-law Phyllis King (Joseph). He is further remembered by a host of family and friends who shared countless cherished memories and moments with him throughout his life.
David will always be remembered for his infectious smile, joyous laugh, and love of hunting, fishing, spending time with family, and cheering on the Baltimore Ravens. David also looked forward every Sunday to worshipping in church with his church family at Asbury Global Methodist Church in Mount Vernon, Md. He was a man of deep faith, immense generosity, and unmatched kindness. Those who knew him will forever treasure the warmth and happiness he brought into every room he entered.
