David Maddern Obituary

David Maddern
March 12, 1949 - January 18, 2025
David Dwight Maddern, born on March 12, 1949, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2025, at Masonicare in Wallingford, after a full week with family continuously by his side.
He was the beloved son of Elizabeth "Betty" (Mary / Fred Winch) and Norman (Irma / Norman) Maddern. David grew up the eldest of four brothers in the West Shore neighborhood of West Haven, Connecticut, and graduated from West Haven High School before attending Southern Connecticut State University.
David leaves behind his beloved wife Patricia Maddern - his life partner of 47 years and, as he declined, his loving caretaker. David was a devoted father and best friend to his daughter Alison Maddern (Frank Mottola) and his stepdaughters Cory DeLise (Scott) and Kathleen Walsh, who was by his side when he passed. He also leaves his cherished granddaughter, Sage Walsh Urban, with whom he shared a special bond. David is survived by his brothers Michael (Maureen), Phillip (Lisa), and Jason (Nancy) Maddern, as well as over 20 nieces and nephews.
The Maddern brothers lost their father as young boys. As the eldest son, and with deep love for his family, David found in himself the profound strength needed to assume the role of patriarch, despite being just a teenager. Throughout his life, his three younger brothers continued to express their gratitude for his loving care.
David dedicated his entire career to Yale New Haven Hospital, beginning as a high school student in 1967 and retiring in 2015 after nearly five decades of service. His commitment and contributions to his work left a lasting impact on all those with whom he worked.
David always made the best-dressed list whether at work or at a family gathering, which was a great source of enjoyment and pride for him. He was a man who found joy in life's simple things: yardwork; caring for his dogs; bird watching; doing household chores and tackling odd jobs throughout the home; long outdoor walks; and, most of all, spending time with his family. He was well known for his dry sense of humor; his famous one-liners: "just go with it," or "it's fine;" his love of tracking the weather; and a disdain for condiments, mayonnaise in particular - all of which were sources of endless ribbing since childhood.
In addition to his professional life, David served in the United States National Guard from 1967 to 1973, achieving the distinction of sharpshooter. He carried this sense of discipline and dedication into all aspects of his life and was proud to have volunteered to serve his country.
David had a lifelong love for dogs and was especially fond of his companions over the years: Guzzy, Nelly, Abby, and Fred. He will be remembered for his dedication to family and work, and for the joy he brought to all those who knew him.
According to his wishes, David's family will be honoring him and his legacy with a celebration of life party for family and friends. Details to follow. In lieu of flowers and other gifts, donations can be made in his name to The Alzheimer's Foundation of America at https://alzfdn.org/donate/.

My deepest condolences to Dave´s entire family. I first met Dave in 2008 when he hired me at YNHH, and from the start, he was the sweetest and most caring boss. As I moved around supply chain, he became more than just a boss-he became a friend & mentor, always offering advice and brightening my day with jokes. He will be deeply missed.

My condolences to all who knew and loved David. I recall his tender kindness toward his family, particularly during his dad's, my uncle, decline. (My father, Robert, was David's dad's brother). How the whole family shared love and laughs in our grandparents backyard picnics is a memory I still cherish.

To Dave's Family and Friends and Dogs,
I worked with him at Yale New Haven Hospital, and there was never a more kind, happy, (well-dressed!) and sweet co-worker! He seemed to always have the answers, and shared his knowledge and care for his job with others. I wish you all peace in your hearts that he lived a life so well-lived. Thank you for sharing him with all those he knew, Lucy Sargeant

Uncle Dave was truly a one-of-a-kind human being, and I feel so lucky to have had him in my life. From a young age, he was a role model I looked up to in so many ways. I remember volunteering in the purchasing office at the hospital and seeing how respected and adored he was by everyone. He wasn´t just good at his job-he was exceptional. He carried himself with a quiet confidence that inspired so many, including me - all while being hysterical and his witty self.

Thanksgivings at your house are some of my favorite memories-perfectly orchestrated with the kind of military grade precision only Dave and your mom could pull off - with support from Grandma Betty. The table settings, the décor, the laughter, and the warmth-it felt like something out of a magazine. The way he and your Mom brought everyone together, made those moments feel special and is something I´ll always carry with me.

Dave wasn´t just about tradition, though; he also had this incredible ability to show what it meant to live life with style and grace. As a kid, I remember thinking how effortlessly cool he was-his perfectly tailored clothes, his polished demeanor. Now, as an adult, I realize it wasn´t effortless at all-it was the result of care and intention. He taught me that style wasn´t just about appearance; it was about how you present yourself to the world, with kindness and confidence.

Uncle Dave showed me a different kind of hard work-one that wasn´t just about drive and determination (though he had plenty of both) but about building a life full of love, laughter, and meaning. His ability to balance ambition with family and joy is something I admire deeply.

I know the past few years were not fair to him, to you, or to your family, and I regret not being more present during that time. But I´ll always cherish the memories I have of him-the parties, the conversations, and, most of all, the laughter. His wit and sarcasm were unmatched, I remember crying from laughing so hard. Such Joy.

We´re all so lucky to have had him in our lives. I´m thinking of you and the entire family, and I look forward to celebrating his life later this year.

With love,
Chris, Jacob, and Abby

David was my cousin (in-law) and I always enjoyed his company when we were at family gatherings. Dry wit, sense of humor and "always" laughed at my jokes. He will be missed. Condolences to my cousin Pat, his three daughters and granddaughter Sage.

David was a great man/brother-in-law. He always made me laugh, especially when he would ask me if I lost weight! I loved him like a brother! I would make sure I´d make him his preferred lunch or dinner and NEVER add mayonnaise but always asked him if he wanted it on his sandwich, so I could see his face light up. He will be missed by many of us but will always be in our thoughts.
