David Stephen “Steve” Mathis, 75, of Norman Park, passed away on Tuesday, February 3, 2026 surrounded by his family.
A funeral service will be held Sunday, February 8, 2026, at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Baker Funeral Home with Reverend Mitch Griffin officiating. Interment to follow at Cool Springs Free Will Baptist church cemetery. Landon Bacon, Charley Bacon, Jesse Mathis, Jacob “Jake” Mathis, Brent Mathis, and Chad Nalls will serve as pallbearers. Denver Braswell and Johnny Brown will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Born on June 21, 1950, in Tifton, Georgia, he was the son of the late Lemuel David “Dick” Mathis, Jr. and Frances Skinner Mathis.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Tommy Nalls. Steve retired from Southern Valley after 27 years, serving as Director of Expansion and Purchasing. He found his greatest joy in being with family and friends. His favorite place to relax and unwind was Mexico Beach.
He is survived by his wife, Valda Marie Roberts Mathis; children, Brad Mathis and wife Laura of Adel, Cary Mathis Bacon and husband Ramsey of Blackshear, Monica Schwalls Redding and husband Jody of Moultrie, Jon Schwalls of Norman Park, Dug Schwalls and wife Ashley of Norman Park, and Del Schwalls of Orlando, FL; grandchildren, Jesse Mathis, Jake Mathis, Charley Bacon, Landon Bacon, Maggie Bacon, Katie Tugwell, Maddie Tugwell, Carter Schwalls, Ellie Schwalls, Sylvie Schwalls, Sophie James Schwalls, Thomas Schwalls, Griffin Schwalls, Jacob Schwalls, Brice Redding and wife Carly, and Blake Redding; great-grandchild, John B Redding; sister, Sherrie Mathis Nalls; brothers Mark Mathis and wife Teri, and Brian Mathis and wife Debbie, both of Tifton; numerous nieces, nephews, and great- nieces and nephews.
