David J. McKenzie September 29, 1950 - September 20, 2024
David J. McKenzie (Mac), 73 yrs old, of Old Orchard Beach, Maine, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loved ones after his courageous battle with cancer.
Mac is survived by his daughter Michelle Cook of Old Orchard Beach, his granddaughter Marissa McKenzie and her fiance Dylan Conley, his grandson Joseph Lemelin and his fiancee Cassandra St. Ours, his two great grandsons Brayden Conley and Jameson Rydle Lemelin, and many nephews and nieces.
He is predeceased by his loving wife Patricia (Pat) McKenzie, his mother Dorothy McKenzie, and brother James McKenzie.
Mac was born to Dorothy J. McKenzie and Charles K. McKenzie on September 29, 1950, at Augusta General Hospital. He lived in Oakland, Maine with his two brothers (Jimmy and William) and his loving mom, Aunt Bea and Uncle Roger. The family moved to Scarborough, Maine where Mac attended and graduated from Scarborough High School. After, Mac met his soulmate Pat at the All Night Club in Portland. After dating for approximately 3 years they welcomed their daughter Michelle on April 14, 1976. After a long engagement the couple were married on February 11, 1984. They had an intimate wedding with a reception at the Eagles Club in Westbrook. The couple were wonderful dancers despite their height difference and it was always enjoyable to watch the two of them cut upthe rug.
After graduating from high school, Mac started his long career in the tire industry. He worked for a number of tire companies but most notable were Noyes Tires, and over 35 years with Goodyear Tires. He retired from Goodyear in 2016. Mac enjoyed NASCAR, hanging out with his family having drinks, and most notably listening to music. Mac had a passion for sports cars; owning numerous Corvette's, Camaros, Firebird, Monte Carlo SS, Grand National, Impala's. If it went fast, he bought it. He passed this passion down to his daughter, bringing her to car shows, monster truck rallies, NASCAR races, New England Speedway, Oxford Speedway and numerous drag races.
When Michelle promoted his title of Dad to Granddad with the birth of his first grandchild, Marissa, quickly became his favorite person in the world. Marissa decided to call him Banky because she simply couldn't say Grampy. And did he take his role as Banky very serious. I t is said it was his favorite title bestowed upon him. Marissa became the essence of his being and his hers. Marissa was in fact his entire reason for being and brought much joy to his life. As he became accustomed to his new role as Banky, Michelle gave birth to his grandson Joseph. Joseph was his little garbage man and he was always quick to tell his daughter to let her son be, he was just an active little boy. He adored his grandchildren, often spoiling them every birthday and holiday. The years did not stand still and before he knew it, he became a great grandfather to Brayden and Jameson who he absolutely adored.
Mac shared a sacred bond with his nephew Kevin and could often be found hanging out on the weekends with him in local dive bars, drinking whiskey and telling tales of days past. The incredible bond provided Mac with a new nickname of "Funcle" which stands for Father Uncle. Mac will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him. His family will continue to make him proud and honor his memory.
Visitation will be held at Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm Street,
