David McManus Obituary

David L. McManus

January 24, 1944 – July 26, 2025

David L. McManus was born on January 24, 1944, in the Berkley section of Norfolk, Virginia. He passed away on July 26, 2025, in his home, surrounded by the love of his life, Sandy, and family. David was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ione McManus; his brothers, Bernard McManus and John Patrick McManus, Jr.; and his sisters, Beulah "Sissy" Denninger, Gloria Sternad, Jean Morgan, Mildred "Susie" Zeiters, and Theresa Fetrow.

As a proud graduate of the Great Bridge High School class of 1962 and the Norfolk Shipbuilding and Drydock Apprentice School, David began his career in civil service in 1967. He served in various capacities for the Department of the Navy for 32 years, retiring from the Supervisor of Shipbuilding (SUPSHIP) Portsmouth in 1999.

David married his high school sweetheart, Sandra McPherson McManus, in the summer of 1962. They spent 63 years together building a beautiful family and a life together based on a stellar example of true love. His deepest love was for his family and the treasured times and joyful gatherings they shared throughout his life. He continued to be an avid sports fan all his life, with loyal dedication to the Green Bay Packers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, NY & LA Dodgers, Boston Celtics, and Virginia Cavaliers. Later in life, he could often be found on a golf course or planning for a fundraiser of some kind. He dedicated his life to sharing his work ethic, integrity, team mentality, and belief in the importance of working hard for the things you want in life with many generations of young people, instilling those core values within his family.

Acts of service and giving back were also large parts of who he was.

A devoted community servant, David spent decades coaching recreational sports in the City of Chesapeake and sharing his love of the game with many young athletes. He was a past president and longtime active member of the South Norfolk Ruritan Club, serving as president in 2008 and as secretary for six years. He was also a founding member of the Chesapeake Sports Club, where he served as secretary during its first six years. Through his leadership and dedication, David helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to benefit the local community, particularly through scholarships for outstanding graduates from Chesapeake high schools.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Sandy, and their three daughters: Amber Genesevich (John), Molly Deal (Brian), and Mandy Bulles (Daniel). He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Joshua Genesevich (Anne), Jarrod Genesevich (Lydia), Kelsey Deal (Jacques Overdiep), Morgan and McKinley Bulles, as well as his three adored great-grandchildren: Presley Jane Genesevich, Keller Rose Genesevich, and Nolan David Genesevich. He was fortunate also to have a brother-in-law, D. Sean McPherson (Mary McPherson) of Houston, TX., whom he considered a younger brother and loved dearly. In addition to his family, David "Mac" leaves behind some great friends and wonderful memories. To know him was to love him, to laugh, or to carry on an in-depth sports analysis; he made sure so many had that chance.

In honor of David, the family kindly requests that contributions be made in his memory. To donate in his name, you may click "HERE" to support the South Norfolk Ruritan Club, "HERE" for the Chesapeake Sports Club, or consider giving to a local charity of your choice.

Altmeyer Funeral Home is honored to serve the family during this time. A memorial service will be held on August 4th, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Altmeyer Funeral Home – Southside Chapel, 5033 Rouse Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23462.
