David Miles Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Pearson Funeral Home on Aug. 11, 2025.

Publish in a newspaper

David died Tuesday August 5th after a brief illness with acute leukemia. He was born January 8, 1939 to Mildred Catherine Earhart Miles and David Malcolm Miles of Louisville who preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death was his stepmother, Dorothy Ann Niemeier Miles. Following his graduation from Southern High School, David entered Hanover College, Hanover, Indiana, from which he graduated in 1961. He was an Associate Development Engineer at the American-Standard Development and Engineering Department on East Broadway for nine years. While there, he learned to use computer modeling to develop a new acid-resistant enamel for bathtubs. When the Laboratory closed, he moved down Broadway to the L&N Railroad Building where he became a Senior Programmer/Analyst in the Cybernetics and Systems Division. During his fourteen-year tenure there, he maintained a train-performance simulator program and wrote cost accounting-programs including lease vs. buy and commercial property investment analyses. When the railroad phased out its Louisville operations, he joined the University of Louisville's computing department. Ending up as a Database Analyst, where his duties had included helping researchers organize, visualize, and analyze their data, he retired after 23 years.

David enjoyed spending time with family and friends, documenting his family history, playing guitar with the Derbytown Quartet, and traveling in Europe – mostly in the British Isles. He was for many years the treasurer of the Scottish Terrier Club of Greater Louisville. He was an Elder at Central Presbyterian Church, a member of the Filson Historical Society, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Louisville Dulcimer Society, and the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

David is survived by his wife of 61 years, the former Yvonne Louise Driskell, his son David Judson Miles, his sister, Mildred Lynn Miles Franks, daughter in-law Ming Wu, granddaughter Ashley Louise Miles, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at Central Presbyterian Church (4th & Kentucky) on August 16, from 10 am to 12 pm, followed by the funeral. Burial will follow at Cave Hill Cemetery.
