Closest Thing to Having a Brother
The closest thing to having a brother is a double cousin. My cousin David Miller would be the closest I ever got to having a brother. My mother´s brother Eddie married my dad´s sister Mary. My dad started courting my mother after a few 42 games at Eddie and Mary´s house. Having double cousins meant that you got to see them twice at Christmas at both sets of grandparent's houses. The Miller and the Edwards would alternate between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Christmas time down at Grandpa Edwards´s house David, our cousin Roy, and I would play on Uncle Buck´s gravel truck. We would also wart our girl cousins when they went to the outhouse. We especially like to wart David´s older sister Patsy when she would be in the outhouse by throwing clods of dirt against the outside of the outhouse. The pitcher pump in Grandpa´s back yard was another gathering spot for the cousins. We would throw water on each other. At Granny and Granddad Miller´s house I would get to see David and his sisters all over again the next day. There was an outhouse there too, but Granny did not put up with monkeying around at her outhouse. My house was just down the road so David and I had the whole neighborhood to play in. David and I would also spend a couple of weeks ever summer together until Grandpa Edwards died when I was in the sixth grade. We never got together for Christmas on either side of the family after he died. Granddad Miller was sick, and Granny decided not to have Christmas anymore at her house the same year. I only remember seeing David one other time after that. It is sad to spend so much time with someone and it just comes to a stop. David and I just went our separate ways. I will always have fond memories of spending time with my double cousin David who was the closest person I would ever have to being a brother.
Rest in Peace my brother.
