David Lynn Mitchell was born on October 8, 1950, in Lafayette, Indiana, to the late Joseph and Mary (Gellenbeck) Mitchell. He passed away at his home outside of Mansfield, Missouri, surrounded by family on August 24, 2025, at the age of 74 years, 10 months, and 16 days. David was a hardworking, generous, loving, and kind person. He loved his family, animals, flowers, and especially his dogs.

In 1972, David graduated Cum Laude from Southwest Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science degree and a double major, all the while working 40 hours a week to pay for his college education. Upon graduating, he went to work for Rosewood Homes, Inc., building homes. Then he worked in the family business, subdividing land for housing developments, installing sewer and water utilities, and building homes. From 1994 through 2003, he worked part time for GII, installing fine cabinetry in malls across the United States.

After moving to the farm in 1986, he became an avid gardener. He loved growing things and often would grow more than the family could use, just so he could give it away or sell it at the “Farmers Market” or to our food co-op members.

After dealing with dementia, which became severe in the last several years, he was still trying to be helpful. He would still say, “Can I help you?” if he saw one of the family needing help, even though he had no idea how to help.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary Mitchell, stepfather, Ezra Gibson, two stepbrothers, one stepsister, and his grandparents.

David is survived by two sisters, Mary Jo and Denise Mitchell, two brothers, Kevin and Noel Mitchell, his beloved aunt, Gladys Nezat, all of Mansfield, Missouri, and many cousins and relatives.

David loved everybody, and everybody loved David.

The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the Hospice Compassus team that were so kind and loving in helping take care of David for the last 6 months of his life.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Hospice Compassus in care of Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home. Donations can made in person at Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home Mansfield or by Mail: 315 N. Main St. Mountain Grove, Missouri 65711.
