David R. Mortensen, 59, of Mooresville, passed away at Franciscan Health Indianapolis on October 16, 2025. Born in Saint Paul, Minnesota on July 11, 1966, he was the son of the late Richard Mortensen and Cheryl (Hansen) Smith.
David graduated from Harding High School in 1984 and thereafter proudly served in the United States Marine Corps until 1988. He completed the Aviation Maintenance Technology program through Lincoln Technical College. David thoroughly enjoyed his job as an aircraft mechanic with United Airlines at Chicago O'Hare International Airport, where he had been employed for 35 years. During this time, David served as a volunteer firefighter and EMT with the Brown Township Fire & Rescue for over 5 years. While there, David met the love of his life, Kathi (Galt) Mortensen, and they united in marriage in 2002.
David was a member of IndyHoodRats, NRA, and Indy Racing League. His need for speed sparked a lifelong passion for drag racing and cars. He was proud of his restored '66 Chevelle. David was also an avid fan of the Indianapolis Colts and the Minnesota Wild. He had a powerful faith, a strong love for his family, and a patriotic devotion to the United States. David's final act of kindness was to give the gift of life through organ donation.
Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Kathi Mortensen; daughter, Brandi Ramey (Todd); grandson, Eli Ramey; siblings, Lynn Bierd, Lisa Sanford, Carrie Mortensen, Michelle Mortensen, Terry Sanford (Cindy), Dan Berberich (Diana), and Shelly Corbin (Anthony); several nieces, nephews, and extended family members; and a plethora of friends and coworkers whom he considered brothers.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Thursday, October 23, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the chapel at Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory in Mooresville. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 24, 2025, with Rev. Mike Ellis officiating. In honoring David's wishes, his earthly remains will be cremated after the service.
