We have never met, but tomorrow I have the honor of running for Nick. Wear Blue; Run to Remember, matched this hero to me and I dedicate my steps to this fallen patriot. On Memorial Day we remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you Nick, for your love of this country. God bless.

My son, Jeffrey Shaffer served with David in Ar Ramadi and was himself KIA in September of the same year. Jeff was 21. We remember Jeff calling us about "Crombie" and with a lump in his throat telling us he was "just a kid". I have a motorcycle that I had custom painted during the summer of 2007 because Jeff was suppose to come home and ride it. It was of his things to do when he did come home. On the bike I had each of the brothers that were killed during that tour in Iraq Dog tags with their name on it painted onto the bike. David's name is on my bike. Each time I ride the bike now each one of the boys ride with me. Just want to let you know that David is not forgotten. Mark, Proud father of Spc. Jeffrey P. Shaffer.

Nickity Nick... you always pop into my head.. we went to school from what 6th to 8th grade... lots of laughs. One that particularly sticks out was when you, me krystle, and wayne were just sittin behind that little thrift shop near my house drinking gatorades relaxing after a long day at school and the lady that lived in the house across the alley way backed up and ran over a glass bottle and we laughed and she came up to me and started yelling at me saying "whatever my people done to your people, I'm sorry!" Haha... oh man I was so sad to hear of your passing, but now that I live close to you again I will promise to come visit.

Hey Nick, was talking about you today. It's always a great story telling people how we both grew up in Yuma but somehow never knew of the other till we both moved to Winnemucca and worked at Arby's together. Reminders of what a small world it is . Always in my thoughts.
Also the book your mom put together in your honor was a great read. Helped fill in some blanks but more importantly it confirmed what I already knew: just how much of an outstanding person you were. Always missed but never forgotten

As another year has passed since your passing I am sorry for the pain that your family still goes through. I think of you often more often than anyone would believe. Everytime I think of my son which is every day all day, I think of thoes who were in his unit and were also killed. I think of what your family goes through and what we have all lost when we have lost a child. May God keep your family in his grace. God Bless all who loved you David.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know David, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To the family of Nick, When my husband and I visit Arlington we always stop by Nick's gravesite and sometimes leave flowers before going to our son, Scott's gravesite.
It is always a comfort to me to see others visiting there in Section 60. Sometimes they are sitting on blankets and playing music. Our friends who visited this Memorial Day said there were many people, some with picnics. Since Nick and Scott died together, it is right that they are both buried at Arlington. Our thoughts are with you on June 7. Nick Crombie will always be remembered and honored by our family.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Nick Crombie was my best friend in basic training and AIT. He used to push me during PT, which was my weakest area. We looked out for each other- I was his battle buddy when he had to go to the hospital all night with a fever and he went with me to have my wisdom teeth pulled. We hung out on weekends, studied together, partied together. I only knew him for 7 months, but he had a tremendous impact on me in that time. Nick Crombie was a good soldier and a good man. He is dearly missed.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers
Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever
Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away
Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go
We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light
Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray
Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

As with 1LT Love, SPC Crombie came to replace my unit in Tammim, Iraq at the end of May and begining of June. I recently read a news article about his message home to his mother. He wrote that he saved the life of an Iraqi soldier. He showed to me while in Iraq that he loved what he did and was committed to helping others. He had the perfect outlook to be a medic. I remember entering a home in Tammim with him on his first mission there and his eyes were huge as he took it all in. We were working to show his unit around the area and get them to know local civilians that could help gather information. He interacted with the Iraqi people well and administered aid to a child that was ill. The Iraqi boy was comforted and Nick nodded his head and smiled.
Nick and Scott were killed literally as my helicopter brought me to Kuwait. I am sorry that I did not do more to better prepare these soldiers for their difficult mission. This area was at the time the worst area in the world to be and they continued on bravely. I will always remember Nick and his sacrifice, not only his death but his choice to serve when others would have denied him that chance.

Please know that I am deeply sorry for your loss.
As a parent, who has lost a daughter suddenly,
and as a sister, who has lost a brother to war,
I am aware of the deep and devastating pain that you are experiencing.
The overwhelming heartache, seems to surface through our shock, as the time passes.
Please hang on to your Faith and know that you will get through this.
Ever so softly and slowly, time does heal.
May David Rest Safely, in the Mighty Arms of God and know that he WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.
I pray that God's Loving Comfort and Grace will be with the Crombie family.
I am the sister, of such a Young Hero, also named David, who made the Ultimate Sacrifice in Vietnam, many years ago.
Surely He hath borne our grief, and carried our sorrow.

To the Family of Pfc. David N. Crombie:
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life. We lost a son 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday.
I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally, but none of these courageous men and women will be forgotten. They will never be able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your loving memories will help to sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is those wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero. God Bless this courageous soldier and family.
