David L. Nicholas, 80, of Altamont, passed away at 3:25 p.m., Sunday, January 4, 2026, at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa.
He was born on July 20, 1945, to Myron and Iliff (Burkey) Nicholas in Emporia, Kansas. After graduating from Hamilton High School in 1963, David earned a Bachelor of Science in History from Pittsburg State University and a Master of Science in Geography from Emporia State University.
From 1968 until his retirement in 2000, David taught History at Labette County High School. After retiring, he was an adjunct faculty member of Independence Community College and Labette Community College. David also enjoyed raising cattle.
An avid outdoorsman, he was a passionate bowhunter, fisherman and hunter.
On December 28, 1963, David and Carole L. Wernli were united in marriage at the Methodist Church in Hamilton, Kansas. She survives of the home.
He is also survived by one son, Kevin Nicholas of Lisbon, Portugal; one daughter, Denise Ozier (James) of Altamont, Kansas; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Melvin Nicholas of El Dorado, Kansas; and one sister, Iris Neuenswander of Topeka, Kansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Rosalee Lovell.
The graveside service will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Altamont.
Memorials are suggested to the Altamont Senior Citizens Center. These may be left at or mailed to Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 374, Parsons, KS 67357.
