David Peplinski died March 10, 2023 in Custer, just one month short of his 82nd birthday. He was born April 11, 1941 in Stevens Point to Clifton and Alice (Goetz) Peplinski. He attended St. Peter's Elementary School, Pacelli High School, and UW-Stevens Point, graduating in 1963. He served for 37 years as a manager at the UWSP Bookstore, retiring in 2002.
David was known for his singing, his humor, and his empathy. He was a skilled raconteur known to captivate audiences with anecdotes and jokes. Much of his time on stage grew out of his love of Barbershop singing which was ideally suited for his deep bass voice. At their annual shows, as soon as he stepped out to introduce a song, people began chuckling in anticipation before he said a word. David sang with a number of quartets, most notably with Ragtime and Command Performance, winning district contests and placing high at international barbershop contests.
David married Judith Bannach on November 26, 1966. He was devoted to her and their family, sons Jesse (Kari Shuda) Peplinski and Andrew (Shawn Dubay) Peplinski as well as grandchildren Claire Peplinski and Blake Peplinski. He cherished his friendships with Barbershoppers, with UWSP faculty and students, and with his Tuesday lunch friends. So many students appreciated his mentoring and empathy. He also cherished his extended family: nieces and nephews Lea Spears, Matthew Spears, Heidi (Mader) Bedwell, Eric Mader, Ryan Elliott, Jennifer Frame, Dave Frame, and John Frame. He was preceded in death by his parents Alice and Clifton, his sister Patricia Frame, his in-laws Amel and Catherine Bannach, and his grandparents John and Stella Goetz and August and Clara Peplinski.
For those who knew David, we will miss his random interjections of historical trivia, his care and attention to store clerks and wait staff (regardless of how busy they were), his collections of oxymorons and pleonasms, and his irreverent joy in off-color jokes at all serious occasions. His rich voice was a pleasure to hear.
A visitation will be held at Shuda Funeral Chapel; 3200 Stanley Street, Stevens Point; on March 31st from 3:00-6:00 pm and on April 1st there will be a visitation at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Church in Custer, followed by Mass of Resurrection at 11:00 am.
The family thanks the oncology center at St. Michael's Hospital, especially Rebecca Schmid and Dr. Reza Islam, and Compassus Hospice, especially Jenny Hurt, Melissa Basemen, Stephanie Somers, and Mark Lewis for their kindness and understanding as well as expert care. Special thanks also go to Lea Spears for her steadfast kindness and advice.
