David Melvin Plum passed away on February 24, 2026, at the age of 88 after a four-year battle with Parkinsonism–Lewy Body dementia — a diagnosis he accepted with courage and grace. He faced his illness with the same resolve, discipline, and faith that defined his life.

David was born on January 30, 1938, in Hudson, Wisconsin. His family moved to St. Paul, MN where he attended Cretin High School, graduating as Cadet Colonel in 1956—a distinction that reflected his early leadership and strength of character.

From 1955 to 1963, David served as a Frogman/Navy SEAL, participating in several CIA combat deployments in Central America, Bay of Pigs, and Vietnam. His patriotism and lifelong commitment to service continued through his involvement with the American Legion Rifle Squad at Fort Snelling National Cemetery and as an officer in American Legion Post 521.

David was deeply committed to education. He earned a BS from the University of Minnesota, an MS in Organic Chemistry from DePaul University, an MBA from St. Thomas University, and a PhD from Capella University. His academic foundation supported a distinguished executive career, including leadership as VP at Gillette and COO/SVP at Tapemark. David also had a short stint remodeling houses/apartments as owner of The Shepherd Restoration Company.

After retiring from the corporate world, he returned to the field of education as a professor, teaching at the Carlson School of Management (MN); Oregon Institute of Technology (OR); Winona State University (MN); and University of Wisconsin–Stout (WI). At these institutions, he taught mathematics, statistics, quality and operations management, bringing real-world executive insight into the classroom. He retired from teaching at age 80, leaving a legacy of leadership in both industry and higher education.

David embraced life fully. He enjoyed fly fishing, motorcycling, and camping. He completed 25 marathons with his first one in combat boots while in naval training on the beaches of Coronado, CA. He attended daily Mass, recited the rosary daily, and participated in 20 Demontreville Jesuit Silent Retreats. He was a member of the Secular Order of Franciscans (St Thomas Moore), 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus (Gaultier-4184); 4th Degree Knights of Columbus (Ravoux), Serra Club, and The Chesterton Society.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and Melvin Plum, and his son, Scott Plum (59). He is survived by his beloved wife, Phyllis; his children Christopher (Angie), Gregory, Stephen (Amy) from his first marriage; Kim (David Bacic), Todd (Robyn), Jennifer (Darius Husain), Paul, Sarah (Michael Janssen), and Jessica (Robert Plonka); 20 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Mendota, MN on Thursday, March 19, beginning at 10:00 am, followed with Mass at 11:00 a.m. and a luncheon at 12:00 pm. Interment occurs at 2:00 pm at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, with the American Legion Rifle Squad participating.
