David Jude Porta, a dedicated military veteran, loving husband, father, and friend, passed away unexpectedly on December 30, 2024, at the age of 78. Born in Brooklyn, NY, to Joseph and Geraldine Porta, David's life was shaped by his deep sense of duty to his country, his passionate love of music, and his many other interests and pursuits.
After graduating from Sewanhaka High School, David enlisted in the U.S. Army in August 1965, just six weeks after graduation. He was trained in Pershing missiles and earned his paratrooper wings with the Airborne Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne Division. David's time in Vietnam profoundly impacted him, where he served as a forward observer, a critical role involving the coordination of artillery fire. David saw heavy combat action, often calling in fire from dangerously close proximity to enemy lines, ensuring the accuracy of strikes that helped secure the safety of his fellow soldiers. His courage and commitment in the face of grave danger earned him numerous commendations. He was discharged as a captain after a 13-month tour of duty and later served as a reservist in the National Guard. The war and the challenges veterans faced upon returning home were a part of David's story-like so many soldiers of that era, he returned to a country that did not always show the gratitude he and his comrades deserved.
After his military service, David graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a B.S. degree and spent 25 years working for AT&T in their engineering and sales departments. After retiring, he came out of retirement to work four more years with the Oklahoma Department of Human Resources, where he continued to serve his community.
David had a lifelong love of music, with an affection for all genres. In his youth, he would sneak into coffeehouses to play his harmonica, a passion that deepened into a love for dance, both for enjoyment and as an instructor. David's other hobbies included reading and sharing his political insights with humor and enthusiasm. He was also an avid gardener, finding joy in nurturing all growing things.
David is survived by his beloved wife of 16 years, Teresa; his daughter, Nicole; his brother, John Porta, and his wife Maureen; his father-in-law, Earnest Miller; his sister-in-law, Rhonda Heard; and many friends and acquaintances who cherished his spirit and friendship.
David's legacy will be remembered for his quiet strength, his unwavering dedication to his family and country, and his profound impact on all who knew him. He was a man of honor and courage who carried the experiences of war with dignity and integrity.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at Yanda and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Yukon, Oklahoma.
