On Thursday August 14, 2025, David “Sam” Samuel Brintle, Sr., of Mount Airy, NC, passed away peacefully at Northern Hospital of Surry County surrounded by his adoring family. Sam was born in the White Plains Community to the late Roy Benton and Ruby Kidd Brintle. As a young man he joined and proudly served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Des Moines. Following his time in the Navy, he married the first love of his life, Rachel Calloway Brintle. He and his new bride spent their newlywed years in Newport News, VA where Sam proudly worked in the ship-building yards, and Rachel worked and gave birth to their first son, David. Later they returned home to Mount Airy and the White Plains Community and built a home; expanded their family with the birth of their second son, Eric. Rachel lovingly raised their sons and perfected her craft of homemaking while Sam went to work at NC Granite Corporation as an accountant where he retired after nearly four decades as Vice President of Finance. After nearly 35 years of their joyous union, Rachel tragically and unexpectedly passed away. And after a long dark period of grief, Sam met and married the second love of his life, Katherine “Kathy” Gardner Brintle. And they had nearly 30 years of a joyous union. In that time, Sam happily embraced her/his new family and poured out his immense capacity of love and kindness to his entire family. Though “Papa” Sam lived a successful and respectable life by every measure, perhaps his greatest achievement was the legacy of love and kindness he left his family and the world around him. Forever indelible in all our hearts and minds will be that “Sweet Sammy Smile.” Sam did not have a clue what it meant to “hold a grudge.” He would give you the shirt off his back and pants too if you wanted. A quiet and humble man of Quaker faith and regular attendee of the White Plains Friends Meeting for many years. Papa lived out the teachings of Christ in his uncommon spirit of humility, grace, forgiveness, kindness, generosity, and unsurpassed sweet nature he gave to all he encountered. Our sweet and precious father, husband, and Papa is irreplaceable to us. But his exemplary life of abundant love and kindness, to all of us, will live on in our hearts and minds. And we take great comfort in knowing that he suffers no more in body. Comfort in knowing that the same Heavenly Father, that “leant” him to us, has called him home to his well-deserved heavenly reward with all the other saints. Funeral services will be held Sunday August 17, 2025, at White Plains Friends Meeting at 2:00pm with Pastor Dusty Ball officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday at the church from 1:00 – 2:00pm. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the Brintle family.
