DAVID EDWARD SAYERS, 89, of Vansant, VA, passed away quietly on December 2, 2024, in Grundy, VA, after a long battle with congestive heart failure. Born in Grundy, VA, on September 28, 1935, to Noah and Elsie (Looney) Sayers, he was a longtime resident of Buchanan County and a founding member of the Grundy Church of Christ. David was a1954 graduate of Grundy High School, earned his bachelor's degree from University of Kentucky and a master's from University of Cincinnati. David remained an avid fan of UK Wildcats (Go, Big Blue!) and Grundy High School sports, especially the Golden Wave wrestling program. Having taught school in Virginia and Kentucky, David retired from teaching after 30 years as a middle school science teacher in Loveland, OH. Along with his UK memorabilia, one of his prized possessions was a caricature of himself drawn by one of his middle school students.
David is survived by his wife, Patty of Vansant, VA, son, Fred Lee Sayers (Julia), Paris, KY; daughter, Cheryl Ann Daniels (Steve), Lake Waynoka, OH; daughter, Martha Sayers, and son, Garry William Sayers (Diane), Cincinnati, OH, along with 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by Patty's children Debra Colley (James), Abingdon, VA, Michael Stacy, Bristol TN, and Ronald Stacy (Mary), Vansant, VA, and their 5 children and 10 grandchildren. He also leaves behind nephews James David, William, Kevin, and Robert Sayers, San Antonio, TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Noah and Elsie, his older brother, Billy Joe Sayers, older sister, Jacqueline Sayers, and sister-in-law Mary Elizabeth Sayers, as well as his wife, Janet Sayers, son, William Douglas Borup, and great grandson, Austin Cicchinelli.
David's cremains will be interred alongside his parents at Mountain Valley Cemetery, Big Rock, VA. A celebration of life service will be held at 2 pm on December 14, 2024, at Looney's Chapel UMC, Leemaster Drive, Vansant, VA, with Pastor Donnie Bailey and Evg. Dennis Wimmer leading the service.
Patty's church family at Looney's will provide a meal for family and friends following the service. The family requests no flowers etc., asking instead that donations to your favorite charity be made in memory of David Sayers.
