David Raymond Schmelzer October 9, 1948 – September 5, 2025. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and friend.
David Raymond Schmelzer, 76, of Midland, Michigan, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2025 surrounded by the love of his family and the faithful presence of his two devoted dogs, Grayson and Piper, who never left his side.
Born in Saginaw, Michigan, on October 9, 1948, David was the son of Joseph Edward and Eleanor (Piggott) Schmelzer. He grew up with strong values, a deep sense of duty, and a quiet determination that would guide him throughout his life. He served his country in the Vietnam War.
David never truly retired. His work life was as varied and dynamic as his interests. He was an entrepreneur and owned local business, Pro-Tec. He drove trucks over the road, he was a locksmith, a mechanic, and he transported people to important medical appointments. He gave his time and talent to Young Eagles and Wings of Mercy. Whether on the ground or in the sky, David was always moving forward, always helping, and always showing up when others needed him.
He found joy in flight, service, and community. He was an active member of Controlled Chaos RC, the Experimental Aircraft Association, and the Midland Sportsman's Club. His love for flying wasn't just a hobby - it was a way of life, a place of peace, and a source of joy he often shared with others.
On December 11, 1982, David married Rebecca Sue Johnson - his partner, best friend, and the love of his life. Together, they built a strong, beautiful family grounded in love, humor, and resilience.
He is survived by Rebecca and his children: Pamela Anzicek, (Joshua), Kelly Wilhite (Gregory), Micah Schmelzer, and Daniel Schmelzer. His life was beautifully enriched by his grandchildren: Benjamin, Mikayla, Joshua, Sarah, Andrew, Timothy, Gina, Cloe, Isabelle, and Lily.
David is also survived by his siblings: Joseph G. Schmelzer, Brenda Nolish, Carol LaFramboise, and James Schmelzer.
He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Levi David Schmelzer; his parents, Joseph and Eleanor; and precious grandchildren, Adorable and Beautiful.
David had a quiet strength, a dry wit, adventurous spirit, and a servant's heart. Whether piloting a plane, lending a hand, or simply being present, he gave his time generously and lived life with humility and kindness. His dogs, Grayson and Piper, were his angels on Earth, staying faithfully by his side until the very end.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00pm on September 13, 2025, at Midland Jack Barstow Airport. Friends may visit with the family from 1:00pm until time of celebration. In lieu of flowers those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider contribution to the Dave Schmelzer Popcorn Fund at the Midland Barstow Airport in his honor.
