David Wayne Schroyer passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, September 1, 2025, surrounded by his loving family after a heroic battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born August 14, 1950, David was preceded in death by his father, Merle Victor "Mike" Schroyer, and his mother, Olive June (See) Schroyer.
David is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years: Judith Kline Schroyer; his son: Michael Wayne (April): grandsons: Matthew Wayne (Kaylee); and Brayden Michael; and great-grandson: Colton Wayne; brother-in-law: Gary Kline (Lori); sister-in-law: Barbara Thrasher (Ernie); as well as many nieces and nephews, and special friends Ron Shaffer, Charles Saeler, and Gilda Stumbaugh.
A 1968 graduate of Mt Savage High School, David served in Vietnam on the USS Lawrence DDG-4 until 1973. He returned home and started a 20-year career as a dragline crane operator with Croner Coal in Berlin, PA. He continued as an expert crane operator with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 37, working for Carl Belt, capping off the last 23 winters of his career as a crew leader at Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Facility. From his Cliffs days, the family recognizes with special fondness his Southern Maryland friends, who are more like family, John and Elaine Ardne.
David was quick to laugh and smile, and generous of spirit. Without fail, he always happily offered a hand whenever needed: from baking pies, making specialty soups, and his famous sausage gravy at the family restaurant: Kline's in the Narrows, to renovating his family home place for his grandson's growing family. OR helping his son build his own home.
A motorcycle enthusiast since his teens, he loved cruising around the backroads on his Harley, occasionally loading up the bike on a trailer for road trips to bike week at the beach with his buddies.
The family wishes to extend deep gratitude to friends for their unwavering support throughout his courageous battle, including the cards, visits, and prayers. Our sincere thanks go to the dedicated teams at Memorial Sloan Kettering in NYC, Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center in Baltimore, and the Schwab Cancer Center in Cumberland for their excellent care and compassion during his illness.
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Friday, September 5, 2025, from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 11:00 A.M., with Elaine Andre officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior.
Military honors will be accorded at the funeral home by the VVA Chapter #172 Color Guard.
A private interment will be in Madley Cemetery.
The pallbearers will be: Joe Twigg, Rodney Shaffer, John "Slick" Ensminger, John Allen Kendell, Jason Garlock, Sr., and Timmy Emerick.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donation may be made to the EUMC Veteran's Memorial Project P.O. Box 358 Ellerslie, MD 21529.
