David Self Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sebrell Funeral Home on Jan. 26, 2026.
David Leigh Self went to be with the Lord on the evening of January 23, 2026. David was a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend.

David was born June 13, 1966, in Durant, MS, to Donna and Doug Self, Sr. He was raised in faith at First Baptist Church. Known as "Hollywood," he attended Durant High School, where he was an exceptional athlete, excelling in both football and baseball. His high school coach once remarked that what he lacked in size, he made up for in grit. There, he set a high school batting average record that remains intact. He continued his athletic career at Mississippi College as a member of the baseball team. While in college, David served as a counselor at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Baptist Assembly. It was also during this time that he met his loving wife, Dee Fisher, to whom he was married for 35 years.

David and Dee were members of Broadmoor Baptist Church for over 27 years, where he served as a deacon and poured his love into others through the parking ministry. While raising their two sons, John and Will, David also served as a Sunday School teacher, MRYC coach, and USSSA select baseball coach. David worked in the mechanical field, with time at Atlas Engineering, Hodges Engineering, Ivey Mechanical, and Siemens, before opening his own commercial insulation company, Self Mechanical Solutions (SMS). He took great pride in working with customers across the Southeast, never meeting a stranger and building lifelong friendships along the way. In 2021, his son John joined him in the day-to-day operations of the company. This partnership has allowed John to continue the success of SMS.

David was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed the adventures of hunting and deep sea fishing, but most of all cherished time spent with his two sons. David had a love for Louisiana State University (LSU), and as a family, they traveled across the country in support of Tiger athletics.

David is preceded in death by his wife, Dee Fisher Self. He is survived by his sons, John Self (Callie) and Will Self; his parents, Donna and Doug Self, Sr.; his brothers, Doug Self, Jr., and Chris Self; his nieces, Elizabeth Lingle (Ethan) and Maddie Self; as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members, and many dear friends.

Visitation for David will be held Wednesday, January 28, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Broadmoor Baptist Church, with a service following at 11:00 a.m. There will be a private, family-only graveside service at West Historical Cemetery in West, MS. n lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorials be made to either of two organizations near to them ,The Center for Hope and Healing at Broadmoor and the Mississippi Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.
