David S. Taborn Jr., of Ocean Township, NJ, died on Monday, December 16th 2024 at home surrounded by family after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. He graduated from Asbury Park High School in 1956 where he ran track, setting a number of records. He went to Georgetown University on a full track scholarship, where, as a freshman, he took first place in the 440-yd and was a co-holder of the record for the 50-yd at the Philadelphia Spiked Shoe Meet. He transitioned from sprinting to longer distance running where he and his wife, Fritzie, participated in many local races and marathons. He was a long-time member of the NJ Road Runners club.
He worked with his family to run Taborn's Townhouse Restaurant in Asbury Park until it closed in 1989 after over 60 years in business. Taborn's was a local favorite known for its homemade pies and soups. He was an avid cook and enjoyed creating new specials to enhance the menu. He loved to bake and made beautiful wedding cakes for special people in his life. In retirement, he worked part-time at Monmouth Park Race Track as an usher and built special relationships with the trainers and their horses. There was a horse named in his honor, David the Usher.
David is survived by his wife of almost 51 years, Claudia (Fritzie) Taborn, his children Debbie and her husband Michael Fantini, Kim Cameron and her husband Mark Guinn, Jennifer and her husband Darrin Owens, David and his wife Kristin Taborn, grandchildren Tara, Michael, Catie, Lexie, Emily, Max, Clara, Neko, great-grandchildren Carter, Caiden and Lincoln, his beloved dog Teddy and his brother Robert Taborn.
Visiting will be on Thursday, December 19, 2024 from 4-7 pm at the Fiore-Buckley Funeral Home, 236 Monmouth Road, Oakhurst, Ocean Township NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace Hospice of Edison, NJ. For condolences, please visit www.fiorefuneralhomes.com.
