Dr. David Templin died after a short illness on June 6, 2024, surrounded by family and cared for by the caring and attentive staff of Alaska Native Medical Center where he practiced for 54 years. His final days were filled with joyful, memorable visits from four generations of family, friends and former colleagues.
Born on April 1, 1933, in Billings, MT, David William Templin was the son of, William F. Templin, church planter and itinerant preacher, and Esther Kliewer Templin, a schoolteacher. He attended Wheaton College in Illinois and received his medical training at the University of Washington in Seattle. While working at a tuberculosis sanitarium in Galen, Montana, he met Mildred (Mickey) Downing, the love of his life, and they were married on June 21, 1959. Mickey was buried last summer on their 64th anniversary. David is survived by his brothers Gary (Gloria) Templin and Philip (Peggy) Templin and his sister Elizabeth Templin, and his stepbrother, Larry (Donna) Basham. He leaves behind five children: Susan Templin, Valorie (Dave) Ringle, Andria (Mark) Anderson, Bill (Marcia) Templin, and Phillip (Bonnie) Templin, 12 grandchildren, and 13 (soon to be 15) great-grandchildren, and Mickey's beloved niece, Denece (David) Hannan.
Dave was commissioned through the US Public Health Service. His first assignment was on the Hopi Reservation in northern Arizona. He continued his studies and service in Phoenix and Seattle, moving his wife and children frequently in the early years of their marriage. In 1970, he moved his family to Alaska where they settled in Anchorage. As an IHS doctor, David traveled to regional hubs and villages, bringing health services to the people rather than expecting every patient to travel to Anchorage. This was a relatively new practice that resulted in many unique living arrangements in towns and villages without traveler's amenities. Dave was not afraid to rough it in ramshackle accommodations. He reluctantly retired from the commissioned corps after 30 years, and then continued to work as a consultant and clinician until December of 2022. He also participated in groundbreaking NIH research on arthritis conditions unique to circumpolar indigenous populations. He continued to visit remote Alaska until the end of summer 2020, seeing patients in locations from Barrow (Utqiagvik) to Metlakatla, and Ft. Yukon to St. Paul Island.
Dave was a letter writer. While he and Mickey were dating and engaged, he wrote a letter to her almost every day. As he traveled for work, he continued writing letters describing the places he visited, sharing philosophical thoughts about society, world affairs and the people he met. He also shared comments he received from patients when he showed up. His favorite was "Dr. Templin! YOU AIN'T DEAD YET? How are you? You still alive?"
David lived a full life beyond medicine. He supplemented his family's food with hunting and subsistence fishing. He and his wife were youth group leaders at the First Covenant Church in Anchorage, leading their children and friends on many adventures and into deeper relationships with God. He drew cartoons that highlighted his quick wit and dry humor. He loved to travel and made time during his clinic visits to enjoy his grandchildren in Kodiak and Juneau. Every family has fond memories of treasure hunts where they searched for secret hidden messages that led grandchildren on journeys that led to hidden treasure chests. Dave wrote a series of fantasy stories with his grandchildren as heroes. He also wrote an autobiography and a biography of Mickey's life that were shared with his family and friends.
In spite of physical limitations during the past four years, David remained involved and connected with his family through Saturday morning Zoom meetings and daily phone calls. He loved visits with friends and enjoyed conversations about a wide variety of topics, encouraging civil dialogue and allowing diverse viewpoints to be expressed.
There will be a memorial service on Monday, July 29, 2024, at Anchorage 1st Covenant Church at 6:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Covenant Youth of Alaska (CYAK), Doctors Without Borders, or Marion E. Wade Center (Wheaton College)

I was one of Dr Templins MA in Rheumatology I loved working with him he was so amazing so wise and loved working with the Native communities. He told me a story about this little house he worked at and said it was a clinic at one of his first clinics he worked at but he didn't care about the size of the clinic it was about getting to know the people he will be caring for and doing the best he can in any environment as long as the patients get the care they needed. He was an amazing Dr. and work family friend. I will miss getting his coffee and assisting him with anything he needed. My condolences to his wonderful family.

It was a pleasure working with Dr. Templin here at ANTHC. He was very knowledgeable, calm, and professional. He respected our people, our culture, our way of life. Sending my love and prayers to all his family. I met one of his grandsons at Skinny Raven on Dimond, when purchasing my Hokas. May his soul dwell with the blessed. Memory Eternal.

Dr. Templin had many patients in Bethel AK. He was a very quiet caring man (as I saw him) and patient as well. He treated myself and many friends. Sending sincere condolences to Dr T's family and friends
